Indian Premier League franchise Delhi Daredevils, which is one of the originally founded eight teams of India’s T20 professional league, will now be known as the Delhi Capitals, starting from IPL 2019 edition.

“Delhi is the power centre of the country, it is the capital, therefore the name Delhi Capitals.. Our logo has been inspired by the design of Parliament House. Tiger is our national animal and the three tigers idea is derived from the Ashok Chakra,” said Parth Jindal during the update, as reported by the Times of India.

“We wanted this name to mean something to each and everyone from Delhi,” he added.

The Delhi Daredevils has been one of the most successful teams in the Indian Premier League, who have only made it to the playoffs of the league thrice, and have finished at the bottom of the points table four times. By changing the name of Delhi Capitals IPL team and changing the Delhi Capitals IPL Logo, the team owners must be wishing that the Delhi Capitals IPL campaign will be more successful than that of the Daredevils’.

The team management have decided to change the Delhi Capitals IPL name and the Delhi Capitals IPL Logo, as well. The reasons behind this name change from Daredevils to Delhi Capitals IPL, although unknown, are being labelled to be of a superstitious nature, to maybe try and do a 360 degree turn in the team’s fortune.

Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir was one of the star additions of the team in the last edition of the Indian Premier League, was given the responsibility of team captaincy. However, the veteran failed to perform and deliver results and proved to be a misfit for the team after just 8-9 fixtures of IPL 2018, following which youngster Shreyas Iyer was handed with the captaincy of the teams.

It was being speculated whether the Delhi Capitals IPL team would hold on to Gautam Gambhir, but the 37-year-old Delhi cricketer announced on December 4, that he had taken a final call on his cricket career, and had decided to quit all forms of cricket. Therefore, it was found out that the Delhi Capitals IPL team would not be hiring the services of Gambhir anymore, starting from Indian Premier League’s 12th season, i.e. IPL 2019.

Changes in Delhi Capitals IPL Logo: From Delhi Daredevils’ old logo to Delhi Capitals Logo

While this is the first time that an active IPL team’s name has been changed, it is not the first time that their logo has been changed, as teams like the Kolkata Knight Riders had changed their logo colour and similar low-key changes had always been prevalent.

Even in Delhi Capitals IPL history, this is not the first time that their logo is being changed.

Initially, Delhi Capitals Logo used to be leather cricket ball, blazing with fire and leaving a trail behind, encapsulating the name – Delhi Daredevils. The Delhi Capitals IPL Logo then, used to look something like the photo shown below.

From thereon, the Delhi Capitals logo was again changed, although minimalistically, from the blazing leather cricket ball to the one shown below.

However, none of changes seemed to change the fortunes of the Delhi Capitals IPL team till the IPL 2018 edition. And now, with the third and the biggest makeover of the Delhi-based IPL team, it is up for the Delhi Capitals IPL fans to see how the team performs.

The name has been changed from Delhi Daredevils to Delhi Capitals, and the Delhi Capitals Logo depicts, instead of a blazing leather cricket ball, three Lion heads. The Delhi Capitals IPL Logo looks something like this.

The co-owners of the Delhi Capitals IPL team, JSW, were the moving force behind this change, and the JSW Sports’ Director Parth Jindal revealed that the Delhi Capitals IPL team will be captained by Shreyas Iyer.
