Brief history of the Australian One-Day Domestic tournament

While Australia’s One-Day domestic tournament is now a great success in their cricketing circles, after having been introduced in 1969 for the first time, it was England which had brought the concept of the domestic one-day competition in 1963, with the Gillette Cup.

It was after the success of the Gillette Cup and it’s wide acclamation, that Australia brought in the concept as well, and hence, the Australia ODD was established in 1969–70. Ever since that first edition, the competition which is usually contested between six teams representing the six different states of Australia, is being contested every summer, under a variety of names and formats. But speaking about the basic nature of the tournament, it is Australia’s List A cricket competition.

Australia’s List A competition was the first one to feature numbers on the players’ shirts, and the first time it had happened was in 1995–96 season. In September 2017, former Australian Test cricketer and legend Jason Gillespie had suggested that Papua New Guinea be added to the competition.

While the main six teams taking part in the tournament are from the six states of the Australian region, there have been times that three other teams have also participated in the tournament for short periods of time. The New Zealand’s national cricket team had competed in several early editions of the tournament. A team representing Australian Capital Territory had participated for a brief period in the late 1990s, and starting in the 2015-16 season, Cricket Australia XI had also took part as the seventh team.

However, regardless of the extra competition that Australia’A List A competition has seen from time to time, New South Wales have maintained their supremacy in the tournament, speaking generally. Make sure you have access to the live score and NSW vs WAU live streaming when the clash takes place.
