Hong Kong cheer on as ICC grants ODI status to Asia Cup ODI 2018 schedule

As the International Council for Cricket (ICC) recently granted ODI status to all the matches of the Asia Cup 2018 schedule cricket, even Hong Kong, who weren’t enjoying the status of an ODI associate with the ICC, were granted one. The move by ICC officially made the Asia Cup 2018 match schedule an ODI tournament.

The Asia Cup ODI 2018 Schedule, which will be the 14th edition of the tournament, will be taking place in the United Arab Emirates in September 2018. It is also worthy to note that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is not going to be a fresher to the Asia Cup ODI schedule, as the Asia Cup match schedule or Asia Cup cricket schedule has been hosted twice previously in UAE – in 1984 and 1995. Hence, this will be the third time that the Asia Cup match schedule or Asia Cup cricket schedule will be hosted in the Middle Eastern country.

The last edition of the Asia Cup match schedule or Asia Cup cricket schedule, which was held in the T20 cricket format, was a special one for the Men in Blue. Why? India had defeated Bangladesh in the final of that tournament, and it was a celebrated victory as Bangladesh was the hosting that edition of the Asia Cup match schedule or Asia Cup cricket schedule, i.e. 2016 Asia Cup.

The five full members of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) were already set to go off during the Asia Cup 2018 cricket time table, or the Asia Cup 2018 time table, and were only waiting for the sixth participant to join them, which turned out to be Hong Kong.

And Hong Kong had lost their ODI status after finishing tenth in the 2018 Cricket World Cup Qualifier in March, 2018, but breathed a sigh of relief when the ICC awarded ODI status to all the matches of the Asia Cup 2018 match time table or Asia Cup 2018 cricket time table, on 9 September 2018.

Asia Cup 2018 Match Schedule was originally set to take place in India

Another interesting thing to note about the Asia Cup 2018 match schedule is the fact that originally, the Asia Cup 2018 schedule cricket was slated to be played in India. However, due to the ongoing political tensions between India and their neighbour, Pakistan, led to the change in the Asia Cup ODI 2018 schedule to be shifted to UAE.

It was after a meeting of the Asian Cricket Council in Singapore on 29 October 2015, that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary had stated, that the Asia Cup ODI 2018 schedule would be held in India. However, due to the political tensions prevalent between India and Pakistan, which were to be the top two cricketing names coming out of Asia for the Asia Cup 2018 Match schedule, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi – Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, had asked whether the BCCI and ACC would consider hosting the tournament in Abu Dhabi, in a bid to ensure Pakistan’s participation.

It was a pragmatic approach by all the organisers involved in the Asia Cup 2018 schedule cricket and the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, as had the Asia Cup ODI 2018 schedule been hosted by India, the audiences might have witnessed Pakistan pulling out of the tournament.

Format of the Asia Cup 2018 cricket time table was slated in July 2018

The frame and format of the Asia Cup 2018 match schedule or Asia Cup 2018 time table was announced on 24 July 2018, with the six participating teams being split into two groups of three each – Group A and Group B. After the first stage of matches in the Asia Cup 2018 time table or Asia Cup 2018 cricket time table, the top two teams from each group will progress to the next stage of the Asia Cup 2018 match time table, i.e. the Super Fours.

And when the teams in the Super Four play against each other, the winning two teams would go on to play the Final of the Asia Cup 2018 schedule cricket. Bangladesh is set to take on Sri Lanka in the opening game of the Asia Cup cricket schedule, at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
