- Barcelona want to sign Adrien Rabiot from PSG this summer
- The Spanish champions are willing to offer a maximum price of €50 million for the midfielder
- AC Milan are also interested in signing the player in winter or next summer
The Spanish transfer market closes on August 31 and everything is possible until then. Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde hasn’t closed the doors on bringing in further reinforcements and young Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Adrien Rabiot is number on his list.
Despite Arturo Vidal’s arrival from Bayern Munich, the La Liga champions are still keen to add more strength to their midfield and Rabiot has been high on their wishlist for quite some time now. The 23-year-old is one of PSG’s rare homegrown talents playing in their current first team but only has a year remaining on his current deal.
Tuchel urges Rabiot to make up his mind
New manager Thomas Tuchel in fact urged Rabiot to make up his mind at a press conference last week as he said: “We know his contractual situation and it is the player who has to decide in this type of situation and demonstrate his loyalty to the club. My opinion on the matter is very clear and Rabiot knows it. It depends on him.”
Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo has reported that Barcelona would be willing to offer a sum in the region of €50 million for Rabiot. The figure represents the maximum amount that the Blaugrana will put forward and will certainly make an attempt to lower the fee is PSG agree to the deal this summer.
The interest in signing Rabiot might surprise quite a few of the club’s supporters as Barcelona have a well stocked midfield with players like Sergio Busquets, Ivan Rakitic, Arturo Vidal, Arthur Melo and Philippe Coutinho all regular first-team starters.
A logical theory doing the rounds here is that Barcelona have an eye on the future and the young PSG midfielder is held in high regard at the Camp Nou. At just 23 years of age, Rabiot has plenty of experience of playing at the highest level and has the technical qualities to excel at Barca.
Barca looking at the future with Rabiot
Signing Rabiot is not an urgent need by any means but Barcelona want to take advantage of the fact that the transfer window for bringing in new players has already shut down in England and Italy, leaving them as clear favourites to steal on march on the player. The club were interested last summer, remain interested now and will remain so in 2019 if the player cannot be secured right now.
If they wish to sign him on a free transfer next summer, Barcelona will know that Rabiot will command a hefty signing bonus and a considerable increase in his salary for turning down a contract renewal at his boyhood club. Other big clubs from England could also enter the fray.
Another interesting angle worth noting here is that PSG might also be forced to sell a player before August 31 to balance their books as they continue negotiations to bring in a new left-back this summer. Atletico Madrid‘s Filipe Luis has been strongly linked in the past few days and Bayern Munich’s Juan Bernat was also discussed yesterday.
Leonardo wants Rabiot at AC Milan in 2019
Mundo Deportivo’s report has further revealed that AC Milan‘s new sporting director Leonard is also in touch with the 23-year-old. Although the transfer market in Italy closed last Friday, PSG’s former director of football, wants to take advantage of the good relations he has with Rabiot and his family to get him to sign an agreement to move to Milan in January 2019 or next summer.
The duo spent three years together in the French capital between 2011 and 2013, forming a strong bond in the process. In fact, it was during Leonardo’s reign as director of football when Rabiot was given his debut at the club.
However, the fact that Milan are not in the Champions League and nowhere near Barcelona’s level in terms of the sporting project might come as a big roadblock in the deal.
