- In latest Barcelona Transfer News, French powerhouse PSG have identified Busquets and Rakitic as two midfield targets
- Barca are adamant on not letting their star players leave at any cost
Those in power at FC Barcelona have been anticipating a complicated end to this summer transfer window for quite some time now and the prophecy looks set to come true as French champions Paris Saint-Germain have identified Sergio Busquets and Ivan Rakitic as two potential targets to reinforce their midfield in the coming days.
Spanish publication Sport has reported that PSG boss Thomas Tuchel is desperate to sign a top midfielder before the close of window and has set his sights on Barcelona to complete a big money deal for Busquets or Rakitic.
PSG have been looking for a new midfielder whole summer
PSG have been trying to sign a new midfielder throughout the summer. They have contacted players like Paul Pogba, N’Golo Kante and Miralem Pjanic but have found it impossible to find an agreement with any of the said players. With a few days remaining until the end of transfer window, they are planning on knocking Barcelona’s doors after signing Neymar last summer.
Barcelona, on their part, have no intention of letting either of the two leave as coach Ernesto Valverde considers them an integral part of his first team plans. However, the club is also aware that eventually it will depend on the players’ will and they might not have anything in their hands.
Busquets, who was recently announced as one of the four club captains, has in fact been offered a new contract and the renewal is expected to take effect from September. Rakitic was also tied down to a contract until 2021 last year, with a release clause of €125 million. His value has no doubt gone up after emerging one of the star performers during Croatia’s run to the World Cup final in Russia.
The Ligue 1 champions are also aware of Barca’s stance and know that their priority is to keep the flock together at all costs. Several key players have signed contract extensions with the club more are likely to follow suit in the coming months.
In fact, RAC-1 has gone a step ahead and reported that Barcelona might have already closed Busquets’ new contract. While the expiry of his deal and the release clause will stay at 2021 and €200 million respectively, he has been given a considerable hike in salary by the club.
Salary hike on the cards for Rakitic?
Coming to Rakitic, the Croatian star is very comfortable at the club and his life in the city of Barcelona but his salary could prove to be a bone of contention as his pay scale not among the club’s elite players, despite his weight in the dressing room. The player is now 30 years old and it is a given that Barcelona will have to increase his salary if he discards anymore offers to leave the club this summer.
PSG and Tuchel have been tailing Rakitic for weeks now but Barcelona have moved quickly to block any move. President Josep Maria Bartomeu has not forgotten what happened with Neymar and is not taking any chances this time around as he knows that it will be extremely difficult to stop a club of PSG’s wealth and fortune if they set their heart on signing a player.
For now, the La Liga champions are comfortable in their position and do not want to sell any of their first-team players but there are two weeks left until the end of window and things can move quickly if the PSG bosses make up their minds.
What we can do is wait and watch if an big offer is made in the next few days!
