- AB de Villiers has finally revealed why he retired from International Cricket
- De Villiers claims he no longer misses playing for South Africa and is loving more time with his family
In today’s latest cricket news, former South African cricketer and one of the modern greats AB De Villiers has broken silence on why he stopped playing for South Africa and why AB de Villiers retired from international cricket. De Villiers retired earlier this year in May 2018 bringing an end to the 14-year career. De Villiers scored 8765 test match runs (4th highest in South African history) and 9577 ODI runs (2nd highest in South African history) but the former International cricketer claimed that he is relieved to have left the game owing to the extreme pressure of playing the International cricket for South Africa. De Villiers claimed that all the players saying they enjoy the time away from their families are blatantly lying and are hiding the actual pressure of playing the International format.
De Villiers does not miss International Cricket
Speaking with The Independent, De Villiers claimed that at times it had become unbearable to play for South Africa and he confirmed why he would not miss playing at the grandest stage of the game. De Villiers hinted at the joy of spending more time with his family and to be able to enjoy his time away from the cricket field.
De Villiers said: “I truly believe that players who tell you they don’t feel the pressure of international cricket, being away from home for months at a time, are lying to everyone and themselves.
“It’s been unbearable at times: the pressure you have to face, performing day in and day out. The expectations that you put on yourself, from fans, from the country, from coaches.
“It is huge, and it’s something that’s on your mind all the time as a cricketer. And it’s definitely something that I’m not going to miss. Absolutely no regrets.”
De Villiers will continue to play the T20 Leagues
Despite bidding farewell to the International cricket, AB de Villiers will continue to play in the Franchise T20 leagues all over the world with IPL, CPL, and the South African T20 Leagues being the competitions where De Villiers will continue playing and entertaining his fans. Reflecting on his decision to quit International Cricket, De Villiers believes that he is currently not missing the game but in coming year or so, he may miss the fun of scoring runs in a big game in front of a jam-packed stadium.
De Villiers said: “I know nothing will compare to that feeling of scoring runs in a big game. Thousands of people chanting your name. But in all fairness, I don’t miss it. Not yet. Maybe a year down the line. I’m still going to play for a few years, I’ll still play a little bit around the world. But on my own terms.”
