The latest Liverpool FC News comes from Switzerland where leading Swiss daily Blick has revealed that Xherdan Shaqiri had concrete offers from Manchester United, West Ham and Southampton before eventually signing for Jurgen Klopp‘s Liverpool this summer. The 26-year-old’s tally of eight goals and seven assists for Stoke City last season and a lowly release clause of €14.5 million saw him attracting a lot of interest after the World Cup.
Liverpool FC News: Klopp’s human nature of contact key in convincing Shaqiri
Ultimately, it came down to Klopp making the first move and his prolonged interest which convinced Shaqiri that Liverpool was the right place for him to go and further his career. It has also been revealed that the friendly ‘human nature’ of the German tactician’s approach played a key role in Shaqiri making up his mind.
To elaborate on this Liverpool FC News, Blick’s report further states that United boss Jose Mourinho was just not able to make an approach in time as the Swiss international had already agreed a deal with Liverpool. Manuel Pellegrini’s West Ham are another club credited with holding an interested in the attacking midfielder’s services, with the player eventually making his Anfield debut in a convincing 4-0 win against the Hammers on Sunday.
Will Shaqiri get regular playing time at Liverpool?
The question which has been on everyone’s mind since Liverpool announced Shaqiri’s signing is that how will the player fit in Klopp’s team. With the front three of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino being untouchables and Naby Keita, Fabinho and Jordan Henderson likely to be the three starting midfielders, the Swiss international is likely to be used as an impact substitute more often than not.
In all likelihood, Shaqiri will be afforded the role in which Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was used last season. Regarding the player’s situation, Klopp said: “We wanted more options on the offensive front. Shaqiri is a fantastic addition in that respect. He can play on the wing, he can play the Number 10 role, and it looks like he can play as a Number 8 too – that’s cool.”
After a blockbuster start to his Liverpool career where he scored a spectacular overhead kick against arch-rivals Manchester United in a pre-season fixture last month, it is likely that Shaqiri will get his opportunities under Klopp and he certainly has the talent to make a big name for himself at Anfield.
