ISL team Chennaiyin FC (CFC) can be called one of the most successful outfits in the Indian Super League, i.e. the top-tier of India football, as they have won two out of the four editions of ISL, including the title of the previous edition. Nonetheless, the team’s head coach John Gregory made waves in Indian football latest news today when he expressed his wish for CFC to become the first ISL team to win two ISL titles consecutively, hinting at the fact that he aims to go hard into the ISL 2018-19 season.
John Gregory has proven to be an excellent coach for Chennaiyin FC, and boasts of rich Premier League experience having played and managed at Aston Villa. As reported in Indian football news by news agency PTI, Gregory said that the one area where he wanted his ISL team to be better in the upcoming ISL 2018-19 season was consistency. He said,
“We will have to make everyone aware of what has happened in the past. Players have to be notified about that and I am wary of that. When we won ISL 2 and in the following season, our performance was unspectacular.”
Indian football latest news: We want to retain the trophy which no team has done before, says coach of ISL team CFC, John Gregory
Gregory said that while they had won the second edition of the Indian Super League, the subsequent season had gone poorer than expected. As reported in Indian football latest news, Gregory emphasised that although CFC have trophies to boast off, the champion teams are always consistent. He said,
“Last season can only be used as a reference and we won’t discuss it very often. It is irrelevant to us and our names are already on the record books. We also have the trophy to prove it. We have got to do it all over again. That’s what champions do.”
“How do you improve a champion outfit? You are expected to do the same this year if not better. We want to retain the trophy which no team has done before. It is not going to be easy (though).”
CFC can be summed up as one of the best teams in India football and ISL, as they have often made waves in Indian football news owing to their attacking prowess and footballing IQ. However, Gregory said that while good attacking wins you matches, a good defensive setup wins you tournaments. The coach said in Indian football latest news and said,
“We spend a lot of work on that side of our game. Attackers win you matches but defenders win you championships. We had eight clean sheets last year, which was good but can be bettered.”
Indian football news: CFC are still in talks with Henrique Sereno ahead of ISL 2018-19 season
Henrique Sereno was the captain of CFC in the previous edition of ISL football, but is currently still in talks with the ISL team regarding a contract renewal for the ISL 2018-19 season. Amidst the uncertainty regarding who will captain the ISL team Chennaiyin FC in the ISL 2018-19 season, Gregory, who won the AIFF Manager of the Year award recently, said the issue was not of much concern. He said,
“Appointing the captain is not a huge decision to make. It’s not really a worry for me. We will just get on with it. Mailson played like a captain and so did Calderon. Those two were immense in various aspects of the defensive side of our game. They played like captains every match, like leaders.”
