In today’s latest Man United news, a happy Jose Mourinho surprised everyone with his post-match thoughts following the 2-1 win over Leicester City. Manchester United kicked off their campaign in style after Paul Pogba scored just 72 seconds into the new season from the penalty spot. There were a lot of selection headaches for Mourinho with players joining the training late due to their world cup commitments, none more than Pogba who played and won the World Cup final with France. Pogba did not feature in any of the pre-season games for Man United and yet he played over 80 minutes and even captained Man United to the opening day win against Leicester. Another notable performance came from Luke Shaw who despite getting criticised by his manager managed to score the winning goal while Andreas Pereira played from a deeper role and managed to impress everyone.
Mourinho was full of praises for his players
Jose Mourinho has cut a disgruntled figure right throughout the pre-season tour for Manchester United where he criticised the board for not giving him the players he wanted and how he thinks it will be a difficult season for all the players and coaching staff. However, last night following the Leicester win, Mourinho did not fail to acknowledge the efforts put in by his players and especially those players whom he has criticised in the past. Fans were happy to see a smiling Mourinho and backing his players.
Mourinho said Pogba was a monster vs Leicester
Mourinho said: “Pogba was a monster. We said maximum 60 minutes and he played longer. Pogba? He’s a very good penalty taker, he likes the responsibility of it. He is the first choice. He was ready. Of course, he trained a lot of penalties during the World Cup. he was very confident.”
Prior to the season, Mourinho’s relationship with Pogba was seen as one of the reasons why Mourinho could even get the sack this season, however, United and Pogba started on teh good note and we could see a sign of things to come in coming weeks.
Luke Shaw was amazing claims Mourinho
Jose Mourinho has previously been overly critical of Shaw’s performances on the pitch but tonight the manager was all praise for the young left-back. Mourinho praised Shaw’s work ethic and the ability to dominate the game for 90 minutes.
Mourinho said: “Shaw? The game was very complete, even if i forget the goal, the performance was complete. He just has to keep going. The mentality was very good, the tactical discipline was very good too. he still had the power to go forward and score an important goal.
“Very pleased for Luke Shaw, he made one mistake in 90 minutes, he was very good defensively. He had a good pre-season.”
Paul Pogba on Luke Shaw: “Luke Shaw, I want to say something. He is someone who works very hard in training. He looks after himself, people criticise him. He didn’t have a lot of chances to play last season. He deserves respect, he deserves people to be happy for him.”
A special word of praise for Pereira from Mourinho
With Nemanja Matic out of the match, it was Andres Pereira who had to play the holding midfielder’s role and he was exceptional according to his manager especially having played from right wing all last season for Valencia.
Mourinho said: “I don’t want to leave you without saying Andreas Periera. From the bench and right winger at Valencia, he comes to Old Trafford and plays a phenomenal match.”
