- Real Madrid finally confirmed the arrival of Thibaut Courtois yesterday for a fee of around £35m
- The Belgian international desire to move to Santiago Bernabeu was quite clear for some time now
- The 26-year-old want’s his former club teammate Eden Hazard to join him at Real Madrid in order to fill the void left by Cristiano Ronaldo
Thibaut Courtois finally completed his desired move to Real Madrid yesterday after a long drawn out saga between his former club Chelsea and future employers. The Spanish giants paid a fee of around £35m for the Belgian international, a player they feel will form the core at Madrid for the next decade.
Courtois, who was AWOL ever since Chelsea’s 2-0 Community Shield defeat against Manchester City had made his desire to move to Real Madrid very clear ever since returning from the World Cup. But the Blues weren’t willing to let their shot-stopper go, as a replacement of his caliber was difficult to find. In the end, Chelsea brought in Athletic Bilbao keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga for £71m, shattering the record fee for a goalkeeper.

In his first interview after his unveiling at Santiago Bernabeu, which was attended by around 4000 supporters, Courtois was visibly ecstatic. He said,”I’m very proud to be here, in the best club in the world. I face this challenge with great enthusiasm. I have received financially better offers but I wanted to be in the best club and be close to my children.”
For those who don’t remember, Courtois was formerly part of Atletico Madrid, who ironically are the Real Madrid’s fiercest rival. However, as per the Belgian international, he always dreamed of playing for 13-time Champions League winners and the obsession started after watching the great Iker Casillas in Madrid’s all-white. He says,”When we are children, there is always a club that you like. There was a goalkeeper in this goal, Casillas, who caught my attention. I had an Iker shirt when I was 10 years old.”
Even though he has got the move he wanted, unlike Chelsea, at Real Madrid he will have to compete with Keylor Navas for the starting birth. The Belgian isn’t scared of competition and is willing to do everything to become the number 1 at Madrid. Speaking about the competition with Navas, Courtois said,”When I arrived at Chelsea I did it to replace Cech. Today I still talk to him. I will do everything so that there is good vibes within the group. If I have to play I’ll be ready, I keep the level of Russia.”
The former Atletico Madrid keeper wasn’t the only player Real Madrid were chasing at Chelsea. Courtois international teammate Eden Hazard was a prime target for the current Champions League winners especially after it was formally announced that Cristiano Ronaldo was moving to Juventus after spending 9 seasons at Santiago Bernabeu.

Speaking about his former Chelsea team-mate, Courtois said,”I’m glad I arrived because I knew it was a dream for me. I would like to be always by his side. He is a great player and if he could come here it would be fantastic.”
“It is important to continue adding titles to the history of Madrid. The challenge is to get all the titles of the year,” said Courtois as he marked his challenges with Real Madrid in his debut season.
After their Super Cup match against Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid will start their 2018-2019 La Liga campaign against Getafe on 19th August. After winning three back-to-back Champions League titles, Madrid are hoping to snatch the domestic league title from Barcelona this upcoming season.
