- Dani Ceballos has hailed Julen Lopetegui for his tactics and slammed Zinedine Zidane for never giving him the needed confidence
- The 22-year-old joined Real Madrid from Real Betis in the summer of 2017
Dani Ceballos joined Real Madrid in the summer of 2017 with high hopes, after being hailed as a player with tremendous potential during his time at former club Real Betis. However, things did not go as per plan and the 22-year-old midfielder was confined to just 12 appearances in his debut campaign at Santiago Bernabeu under Zinedine Zidane.
Since then, the scenery has completely changed at the club as Zidane left his position after securing a third consecutive Champions League title in May and star player Cristiano Ronaldo has also joined Juventus. Former Spanish tactician Julen Lopetegui has taken over the reigns of Los Blancos and has used Ceballos to great effect during Madrid’s pre-season so far.
Ceballos grabs the chances offered by Lopetegui
In Latest Real Madrid News, such has been the young star’s impact that he has been labeled as a ‘pleasant surprise’ by leading Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo. Ceballos has in fact been one of Lopetegui’s most used players in the pre-season, a stark contrast from the playing minutes he was afforded by Zidane last term.
Speaking after his side’s 2-1 win over AS Roma in the Intercontinental Champions Cup on Tuesday, Ceballos did not hold himself back from hailing Lopetegui and taking a dig at his former boss Zidane to make headlines in all Latest Real Madrid News columns today.
“Zidane never gave me the confidence that Lopetegui has given”
“The confidence of the coach is fundamental and I have had this ‘feeling’ from the first moment. He (Lopetegui) gave me the confidence that (Zinedine) Zidane could not give me. Last year I did not have all the opportunities that I wanted. I think that in this pre-season things have gone well and I hope to have more minutes,” Ceballos said.
The midfielder then went on to assess his performance against AS Roma and during the club’s tour of the United States as a whole. He also shed some light on how the team is adapting to Lopetegui’s style and ideas ahead of the 2018/19 season.
“In the first part we played great, keeping the ball and attacking their backline as the coach wanted from us. I think that in these three games it has been seen that the team has reacted well to the mechanisms of new coach and we must continue to prepare for August 15th (the European Supercup),” Ceballos added and signed off.
