This is the first time Virat Kohli has reached the summit of ICC Test batsman ranking but will be the seventh Indian to do so. The Indian batsman to reach the summit was the great Sachin Tendulkar back in 2011. Kohli’s innings of 149 runs in the 1st innings of the Edgbaston Test match helped him gain a total of 31 points, which took him past Steve Smith, who he now leads by 5 points.

Apart from Tendulkar, players like Rahul Dravid, Gautam Gambhir, Sunil Gavaskar, Virender Sehwag and Dilip Vengsarkar have also occupied the top spot in ICC Test batsman ranking. Steve Smith had occupied the number 1 spot since December 2015 but with him out of competitive international for a while, the Royal Challengers Bangalore captain has a real chance of taking a huge lead over the Australian.
