In latest cricket news, following his brilliant hundred in the 1st test match against England in Edgbaston, Virat Kohli has now overtaken Steve Smith to become the number 1 Test batsman in the world. While the rest of the Indian batting line-up managed just 214 runs in the defeat to England, captain Kohli was solid as ever scoring a total of 200 runs in the match.
India Cricket News: Kohli 1st Indian after Tendulkar to take over the number 1 spot in ICC Test batsman ranking
This is the first time Virat Kohli has reached the summit of ICC Test batsman ranking but will be the seventh Indian to do so. The Indian batsman to reach the summit was the great Sachin Tendulkar back in 2011. Kohli’s innings of 149 runs in the 1st innings of the Edgbaston Test match helped him gain a total of 31 points, which took him past Steve Smith, who he now leads by 5 points.
Apart from Tendulkar, players like Rahul Dravid, Gautam Gambhir, Sunil Gavaskar, Virender Sehwag and Dilip Vengsarkar have also occupied the top spot in ICC Test batsman ranking. Steve Smith had occupied the number 1 spot since December 2015 but with him out of competitive international for a while, the Royal Challengers Bangalore captain has a real chance of taking a huge lead over the Australian.

Virat Kohli who is currently also the number 1 ODI batsman in the world is now on 934 points, which is the highest tally achieved by an Indian and the second highest among the Asian players, only Kumar Sangakkara is ahead of him with 938 runs.
Kohli’s 31 points from the Edgbaston test match helped him overtake Sunil Gavaskar points tally of 916, making him now the Indian batsman with the highest points in T20 (897), ODI (911) and Test cricket (934). However, he will need to maintain his form over the course of this English test series to finish the series as the Number 1 Test batsman in the world.
