- India and England will be starting a 5-match test series today with the 1st test match at Edgbaston in Birmingham
- Former Indian batsman VVS Laxman believes the experience from previous tours will come in very handy
- He backs Kohli to support Shikhar Dhawan, who got a golden pair against Essex in the practice game
India and England will start their 5-match test series today at Edgbaston in Birmingham, this will mark the 1000th test match for the host nation, having played their first ever red-ball game back in 1877. Virat Kohli and his team will be hoping to spoil England’s part and take a much-needed advantage from the 1st game itself.
With over a decade gone since India last won a test series in England, it is important that team India make a good start to this long drawn out series eventually culminating on September 11th. Having lost the test series in South Africa earlier in the year by a close margin, team India must exert pressure from the start.
Live Cricket News: Time for India to build on the gains of South Africa
VVS Laxman who made over 766 test runs against England at an average of over 30 wrote a column in India’s leading daily newspaper Times of India. He said in his column, “Virat Kohli will believe he has the resources at his disposal to put it past England in the five-Test series starting on Wednesday. I am of the same opinion; this is a fantastic opportunity to build on the gains of South Africa. There is plenty of experience in the batting group. Almost everyone has played Test cricket in England previously, too. That is a huge plus.”
In cricket live news, as per VVS Laxman, the batting contingent must use their previous experience of playing in England. It is important Indian batsmen bat for long hours and post a big total, especially in the 1st innings. He said,”It will be important for the batsman to make the most of their knowledge, of the conditions to put up a big score in the first innings because, especially overseas, it is first-innings runs that set up victories.”
The latest live cricket news going into the 1st test match is that India will be missing the services of their strike duo Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. The former is currently recovering from a finger injury, while the latter caused an injury to his back during the ODI series and is now going to miss the test series. However, unlike some years back, India has a huge pool of seam bowlers who are more than capable of filling the starting spots in the team, like Mohammed Shami and Ishant Sharma.
“The bowling unit has variety and depth. Of course, Bhuvneshwar Kumar will be missed, as will Bumrah for the 1st test at least, but because there are so many quality pacers to pick from, it makes the task of the team management somewhat easier,” said Laxman while explaining the mindset of the coaching staff and captain.
Cricket Live News: Laxman backs Shikhar Dhawan to come good in this series
The latest cricket news today will be surrounding one player who will be heavily discussed by the management and the captain which is Shikhar Dhawan, who after recording a pair against Essex in the warm-up game is in real danger of losing his test side for this tour at least. However, VVX Laxman believes that Dhawan must start for India, without the burden of failure on his back, as that will allow him to play his natural game and maybe even dominate the likes of Broad and Anderson.
The wristy batsman from Hyderabad said,”India must stick with Dhawan for the 1st test. He looked in very good touch in the limited-overs games, and made a hundred in the 1st session of the one-off test match, against Afghanistan. He must be encouraged to go out and play free, without the fear of failure weighing on his mind, because that’s when he is at his most dangerous. He can stamp his authority on James Anderson and Stuart Broad and total neutralise England’s biggest threat.”
As per Laxman, the combination to be used by Indians should include Hardik, Ashwin and 3 pacers as that will give the batting enough depth and provide India with 5 proper bowlers. Kuldeep Yadav who has been fantastic for India in the limited-over format recently will also be vying for a place in the starting XI ahead of one of the seamers if conditions suit the slow bowlers.
