Coach of the India football national team Stephen Constantine has recently come under direct scrutiny by the All India Football Federation (AIFF) after he openly criticized the India U-17 team’s performance in the World Cup from last year. Indian football news revealed that Constantine’s comments have led to much furore from all corners of India football, and while the 55-year-old was almost forced to take back his words, the AIFF are likely to review Constantine’s “coaching methods and style of functioning”.

Indian football latest news revealed how Stephen Constantine got into trouble on Sunday (July 29) when he was forced to draw back his own observations about the performance of the Indian football players of the national U-17 setup who had lost all of their World Cup games on home soil last year. While the U-17 World Cup coming to India was a huge step for India football, the U-17 boys performance had made waves in Indian football news for all the wrong reasons.

A few hours after Stephen Constantine was reported in Indian football news that he failed to understand the hype surrounding the India U-17 team despite them losing all their matches in the U-17 FIFA World Cup last year, the Englishman hastily added that his comments were “misinterpreted”, as reported by Telegraph India in Indian football latest news.

AIFF claims they need to review the scenario in “proper perspective”

Sources in the know how of India football said that the AIFF top brass have taken serious note of the coach’s remarks, and could review his position once the India football national U-17 team returns from the SAFF (South Asian Football Federation) championship in Bangladesh in September. As reported in Indian football news by Telegraph India, an official said,

“Top players have repeatedly complained against Stephen’s coaching methods and his style of functioning. And after what happened today, which is a direct attack on federation’s policies, we must look at the scenario in proper perspective.”

Speaking about how the India U-17 was hyped, Constantine made waves in Indian football latest news when he said “he was not sure what the hype was about,”. As reported by Telegraph India in Indian football news, Constantine had said,

“There was a lot of hype surrounding the under-17 team. (But) They did not win any game (in the World Cup). I was not sure what the hype was about…. We did okay. But we never knew why we are making it such a big deal. In the first place, the team did not qualify for the under-17 World Cup but played as the hosts and lost all the games. They played the I-League and came last.”

Constantine retracts from his statements after getting flak from all corners of India football

After his statements were taken negatively by the AIFF and the sections of India football, the coach of the U-17 Indian football players issued another statement, saying,

“The question was put to me with regards to the goalkeeper Dheeraj who has not played for the last six months due to no fault of his own. I would like to utilise this opportunity to state that my comments were misinterpreted and now I wish to put the record straight.”

Outrightly denying that his statements were in anyway directed towards the All India Football Federation, Stephen Constantine said, “I would not like to blame the federation. That is how it is.”

While the coach’s statements have made way to much of criticism with a common understanding that Constantine needs to review his coaching methods, it is worth to note that the 55-year-old has been working to enrich India football as well. Recently, he had called up four players from Indian Arrows for the SAFF camp. However, he has also come under scrutiny for not attending all of the national India football team matches. Replying to the concern, Constantine said,

“It is not possible for me to attend all 200 games. There are scouts to spot players… I don’t need to explain myself. I have watched as many matches as possible whenever I am in India. I am not going to say whether it was 15 or 20 games.”
