  • English wicket-keeper batsman Jonny Bairstow is excited to be playing the number 1 test side in a 5-match series
  • Bairstow welcomes the return of Adil Rashid, his Yorkshire team-mate in the test squad
  • ECB has faced a lot of flak for bringing back Rashid, even though he had clearly said his priorities were white-ball cricket

After their draw against Essex in the practice game, India are all set to take on England in a 5-match test series starting from August 1st at Edgbaston in Birmingham. The Cricket News Today or the Latest Cricket News surrounding the 1st test has largely been regarding the selection of Adil Rashid in the test squad after almost 2 years.

Jonny Bairstow, who is going into the test series in the form of his life, spoke to Cricbuzz ahead of the 1st test match. With over 500 runs in ODI cricket this summer that to at a phenomenal average of 56.77, the wicket-keeper batsman will be a very key part of the test series and someone Indian bowlers need to prepare for.

England to looking to not repeat the mistakes from the Ashes

This will be England 2nd 5-test match series this year following the Ashes earlier in the year, which obviously didn’t go as well as England would have liked. However, this time around, Bairstow is very excited to go against the number 1 test team in the world in a series of 5 test matches.

Speaking about the latest cricket news surrounding Adil Rashid, Bairstow choose to stay in the middle, rather than take sides. He said, “With everyone getting behind him, everyone is really excited. You guys saw him in that one-day series so hopefully, we can emulate some of the skills he showed and put on a show there.

“He obviously bowled really really nice in the one-dayers and the way the white ball has been coming out of his hand, it is an exciting call-up for him. He is delighted and I am really excited for him.”
In the ODI series against Australia and India in the summer, Adil Rashid managed to pick up a total of 18 wickets. In the 3 matches against India, Rashid picked up 6 wickets including the so-called ‘ball of the century’ to Indian captain Virat Kohli. In the total of 30 overs that he bowled against India, Rashid managed to come out with an impressive economy of 4.96.

Bairstow believes that the experience of white-ball cricket will help Adil Rashid in test cricket

“I think he has matured a lot. You can see that in the way that he is starting, the way he is bowling in the Powerplays in one-day cricket. And I don’t think hyping up too much, yes he hasn’t played red ball cricket, he has played white ball cricket is too big a thing.
“At the same time people are not necessarily going to come at him as hard in red-ball cricket as they do in white so the shape he gets on the ball, the line he might bowl, the length he might bowl might differ as well. It is an exciting challenge for him, as for us all, going from white ball cricket to red ball cricket,” Bairstow said while talking about the recent performances of his Yorkshire teammate for 15 years.
Yesterday former England captain Michael Vaughen criticised ECB’s decision to bring back Rashid after he had clearly indicated back in February that his focus on white-ball cricket. But Bairstow feels that his inclusion, could given England the x-factor in this series, especially with pitches expected to be much different from what we have come to expect from England.
