- Former England captain Michael Vaughan slammed ECB’s decision to pick Adil Rashid for the 1st test match against India
- Adil Rashid responded to Vaughan’s comments and termed them as ‘stupid’ and ‘nonsense’
- ECB has faced a lot of criticism for picking Adil Rashid, given that he has not played red-ball cricket for England since 2016.
England Cricket Board yesterday confirmed the 13-man squad that will be facing India in the 1st test match at Edgbaston in Birmingham. Given that Adil Rashid hasn’t played an international test match since 2016, his selection into the squad caused a lot of controversy with ex-players and experts clearly surprised by ECB’s decision.
In latest cricket news live, Former England captain Michael Vaughan slammed ECB’s decision to recall Rashid in the test squad after the player had made it very clear that his priority was playing white-ball cricket. The 43-year-old called the board’s decision as ‘Ridiculous’ in a tweet that he put out shortly after the announcement was made.
So we have picked someone who cannot be arsed with 4 day cricket for the Test Team … Forget whether he is good enough or not I find this decision ridiculous … !!!

Vaughen not alone in criticism of ECB, Nasser Hussain joins in
The latest cricket news is that Vaughen was not alone in criticising the national board for their decision. Another former captain Nasser Hussain spoke to Skysports after the squad was announced and even though he supported Rashid to some extent, he made it clear that his selection will set a bad practice for players involved in county cricket.
Adil Rashid last played a test match for England back in 2016, which was against India ironically. He signed a white-ball contract with Yorkshire earlier this year, making his priorities very clear. His intention was to focus on limited-overs cricket but his recent performances in ODI series against India and Australia have pushed the English board to recall him to the national team for the longest format of the game.
With Vaughen’s tweet spreading around, Rashid choose to speak to BBC and was quoted as saying, “He (Vaughan) can say a lot and he thinks people might listen. A lot of people have got no interest in what he says. His opinions do not matter to anybody. When I mentioned at the start of the year I will not be playing red-ball cricket, he tweeted something then. He was being controversial and saying his stupid things then too.”
Rashid not too bothered with the criticism coming his way following his selection in the test team
Rashid who had signed a contract with Yorkshire for limited overs cricket isn’t too worried about the backlash that he will be facing from the county and its fans, who were eager to watch him playing in the ongoing Vitality T20 Blast.
“I don’t see what the big deal is. It was not an easy decision, but when your country wants you and asks if you are available, you cannot just say no,” said Rashid
These comments came in reply to Yorkshire chief executive Mark Arthur’s comments after learning that Rashid had been picked up for the 1st test match against India. The chief executive had said,”surprised that England have called Adil up after not playing red-ball cricket this season”
When Rashid was asked to comments on the remarks made by Mark Arthur, he said, “I don’t need anybody’s support in that situation. I know what I want to do and achieve. If I give 100% and it goes well, it goes well. If it doesn’t then I will still be happy.”
In India cricket news today, Virat Kohli and his men are warming up for 3rd and final days play in their practice game against Essex. Adil Rashid, who has picked up 38 wickets for England in test matches, but received the call-up to the test team thanks to his amazing performances this summer against India and Australia. He picked up a total of 20 wickets in ODI’s against the mentioned two teams with a fantastic average of 23.95. He was in the news recently after dismissing Virat Kohli by what is being termed as the ball of the century in the 2nd ODI in Cardiff.
