  • India are currently playing a practice match against Essex in order to prepare for the upcoming 5-match test series against England
  • Guatam Gambhir believes that India must get on the field knowing they are the No. 1 team in this format
  • The former Indian opener thinks for India to have the best chance of winning this series, they must play with 5 bowlers

India started off their 3-day practice match against Essex yesterday at the County Ground in Chelmsford. Having scored 322 runs for the loss of 6 wickets on Day 1, Virat Kohli and his men will be mighty pleased by their effort and will be hoping to repeat the same performance when they take the field against England on August 1st in Birmingham.

After losing the ODI series, number 1 ranked test team will be hoping to repeat what they did in South Africa early on in the year and give England a tough fight in their own backyard. The hosts will not be taking the Indians lightly at all, especially after losing 2 back to back test series against Pakistan and New Zealand.

Playing like the Number 1 side in the world, very important for India says Gautam Gambhir

In Latest India cricket news, Gautam Gambhir, who has a test century to his name against England, spoke recently on Cricbuzz sitting alongside his former Indian team-mate Zaheer Khan. The opener believes that to succeed in England, Indian team must play without fear and like the No.1 side in the world.

“Irrespective of how the conditions are, try and play as the number 1 side in the world. Try and express in front of the opposition that we are here as the number 1 test side in the world. Irrespective of what the result was in the ODI’s, you still have to go with the mindset of winning the test series and try to play like the number 1 test team in the world,” said Gambhir in reply to TV presenter Gautam Bhimani’s question in the Cricbuzz studios.

Even though the batting unit looks kind of set, there are some questions that remain when it comes to the bowling contingent and the combination of bowlers that Virat Kohli is going to pick to start this long drawn out test series. Whether Kohli goes in with 2 spinners or just 1 will be the biggest question that the captain must answer prior to the toss on August 1st.

Playing 5 bowlers gives India the best chance to win in England

Gautam Gambhir, who has played a number of test matches in England during his glittering international career, believes that India must go in with 5 frontline bowler and give an early indication to England of their motive to win the test series rather than just being a participant.

In latest cricket news live, Gambhir who was the highest run-scorer in the 2007 T20 World Cup Final and the  2011 World Cup Final, said, “The first sign of that attitude will be if you pick 5 bowlers and signal to the opposition that we are here to get 20 wickets. Even if our batsmen get 250 or 300 runs, we have got the bowling attack to get you out.

If you are looking at part-timers to give you 1-2 overs here and there, that might become too defensive, which is fine for ODI’s and T20’s but in test cricket, I think you gotta go with your best 5 bowlers because those are the guys who are going to help you win the test match and the series further on.”

Over the next week, Virat Kohli has to decide to who among Ravi Ashwin, Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja should he pick for the 1st test match. A positive result in the opening match could go along way in helping India secure what will be a very tough test series in conditions not really suited to the Indian playing style.
