- Atletico Madrid’s discussion with AC Milan regarding Nikola Kalinic have broken down
- The Spanish club are now looking towards Olivier Giroud as a back-up for Diego Costa next season
- Olivier Giroud was part of the French World Cup winning squad but failed to find the target even once in 7 appearances
With around 18 days to go for the summer transfer window to slam shut, clubs across Europe are working overtime to bring in reinforcements before the start of 2018-2019 season. One club which still has a lot to do before it’s completely ready to mount a title challenge next season is Chelsea, who only a few days ago confirmed Maurizio Sarri as their new manager.
Giroud ready to move from Stamford Bridge after just 6 months
The latest Chelsea FC transfer news surrounds Olivier Giroud, who only moved to Stamford Bridge in January this year following the arrival of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at Arsenal. The 31-year-old striker scored 3 goals in 13 appearances for the Blues last season and was part of the French World Cup winning squad. He played a total of 7 matches at the 2018 FIFA World Cup but failed to get on the scoresheet or even register a shot on target.
The latest Chelsea transfer rumours suggest that Spanish giants Atletico Madrid are looking to Olivier Giroud on loan for the next season. The Frenchman wasn’t even considered as an option at the start of the summer with Simeone’s side focusing all their attention on AC Milan striker Nikola Kalinic.
However, it appears that Atletico’s discussions with the Italian club have stalled, which has forced them to look at other options elsewhere. Bringing in a new striker at Wanda Metropolitano is the top priority for the club following the departure of veteran forward Fernando Torres to Japan.
Giroud’s link-up play with Griezmann at the World Cup tempting Simeone to bring him to Spain
Giroud didn’t score a goal in Russia this summer but his understanding with the likes of Griezmann and Mbappe was fantastic. His presence up top allowed the likes of Griezmann, Mbappe and Pogba to move into free spaces around him, something Simeone hopes to have a repeat of if he can bring in Giroud this summer.
As per Chelsea FC Latest Transfer News, Atletico Madrid are looking to sign Giroud first on a loan deal this summer, however with just one year left on his contract at Stamford Bridge, and the deal will not have any compulsory option to buy him at the end. Hence, it is unlikely Sarri will allow him to go out on loan, without either signing a new contract or receiving a hefty monetary compensation from the Spanish club.
If Giroud does move to Wanda Metropolitano, he would be mainly used a back-up for Diego Costa, who still remains the number forward at Atletico Madrid. But with Chelsea working hard to bring in Gonzalo Higuain from Napoli in the coming few days, it might be better for the French forward to take up the bit-part role he will get at Atletico, rather than fighting for a starting birth against a striker of the calibre of Higuain.
