- Real Madrid are lining up a move for €110m Inter star Mauro Icardi in the coming days
- The European Champions are looking to fill the void left by Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure to Juventus
Cristiano Ronaldo‘s move to Juventus has left a gaping hole in Real Madrid’s attack and the European champions have been actively pursuing targets to replace their departed talisman who scored an unprecedented 450 goals in his 438 appearances for the club. The two prominent names in this list are Paris Saint-Germain duo Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.
Mbappe and Neymar both out of bounds for Madrid
While signing Mbappe has now been deemed “impossible” after his heroics at the recently concluded 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, Neymar has also ruled out the possibility of him moving to Santiago Bernabeu as he has been persuaded by PSG president Nasser Al Khelaifi to stay at the club this summer.
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is well aware of the fact that Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema are not enough to supplement Ronaldo’s 50 goals next season and this is where Inter Milan‘s Mauro Icardi enters the fray. The Argentine striker was also a target for the club last winter. Spanish daily Mundo Deportivo has reported that Icardi has also caught the attention of new Madrid boss Julen Lopetegui who feels that the 25-year-old striker has the ideal profile – proven goalscorer, with lots of power and experience of playing in a big league.
Goal-machine Icardi the ideal fit for Lopetegui and Perez
However, it is Icardi’s price-tag which might be a big stumbling block in the deal as Inter will not let their captain leave for anything less than €110 million. The striker is the San Siro club’s undisputed star man and situation becomes all the more grim for Los Blancos as the start of 2018/19 season is now very close and the Serie A giants will not be open to the idea of letting their prized asset leave at such a crucial stage.
Icardi, who is under contract at Inter until 2021, scored a stunning 29 goals in 34 appearances for the club last season. His record for Inter is a proof of his abilities and the elimination of Neymar and Mbappe from the list of Real Madrid’s targets further strengthens his case.
Despite everything, Icardi to Real Madrid still remains a long shot as president Perez will no doubt try and go all out for his primary target Neymar in the days to come. If the move does happen, it might just prove to be a masterstroke for both Icardi and Los Blancos.
