TNPL 2018 News: Star Sports stresses the need to focus on regional cricket, offers fans chance to be a part of commentary panel

Merely three years old, the regional Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) has quickly established a reputation for producing high-quality cricket in a competitive environment. What also adds to the charm of this tournament is the commentary team that includes a number of recognized faces from across the globe and who were seen during the recently concluded IPL 2018.

After the success of its regional commentary experiment during IPL, Star Sports, which is the official broadcaster for TNPL as well, is now looking to widen the scope of vernacular commentary options so as to bring the game of cricket ever closer to the hearts of millions of fans across the country.

Star Sports launches #MicUpforTNPL contest

In its bid to build TNPL 2018 as a popular T20 league, the broadcasting giant has launched an ambitious marketing campaign where Star Sports Tamil is offering fans a unique opportunity to take part in a contest and join the elite commentary panel of TNPL 2018 with a catchy #MicUpforTNPL contest.

The premise of this contest is that fans can showcase their oratory skills in Tamil and ultimately land themselves a chance to sit alongside former India cricketers like Subramaniam Badrinath, Laxman Sivaramakrishnan and Hemang Badani in the commentary box during a live TNPL 2018 match.

To take part in this one of a kind contest, the aspiring participants need to record and tweet their videos to handles – @StarSportsIndia and @TNPremierLeague – using the ‘MicUpforTNPL’ hashtag.

Adding to the hype of this campaign, S Badrinath said: “The contest #MicUpforTNPL is an excellent platform for fans to showcase their commentary talent, giving deserving talent the opportunity to actually make a career for themselves in the field. The contest is another step forward for the tournament and regional commentary, giving fans a first-of-its-kind chance of voicing their love for the sport on the big screen.

It has to be kept in mind that ever since the inception of Tamil Nadu Premier League in the year 2016, Star Sports has been working tirelessly to push the boundaries of exposure and reach for the tournament. The presence of several big ticket international names like Michael Clarke, Simon Doull, Matthew Hayden, Dean Jones and Scott Styris in the TNPL Commentators list is proof of the broadcaster’s endeavour.

However, an important question which needs to be answered here is that whether a niche regional property like the TNPL can ever scale up to the level of maturity, viewership, revenue and stature that the Indian Premier League (IPL) enjoys in this country. Further, putting in place a formidable team of TNPL Commentators couldn’t have been easy on the channel’s pockets. Can a state-level tournament earn the required Return on Investments (ROIs)?

Reacting to these questions, a Star Sports India spokesperson said: “TNPL is a platform for the local Tamil Nadu cricket players to showcase their talent and it has given us players like Washington Sundar, Murugan Ashwin, and Natarajan who hail from a very humble background but went on to win national acclaim.

TNPL is the first regional league in India to have international commentators since its inception in 2016. We have had great responses for international commentators both in terms of quality of commentary and localisation (wearing dhotis, making dosas, Dindigul biriyani, interacting with college/ school students, visiting cultural sites, local restaurants).”

Further, the spokesperson also added: “TNPL has been established as the pride of Tamil Nadu in the first two seasons and it has worked. It has shown great potential in terms of quality of cricket played and an action-packed cricketainment for the Tamil audience.

We believe TNPL has the potential to become one of the greatest regional leagues in India and that’s why our marketing push has been significantly large for TNPL 2018. But right now our mission is to grow TNPL and monetisation will follow.
