Cristiano Ronaldo shocked the footballing world this week after he signed for Juventus in what was a record-breaking £100m deal with Real Madrid. This Real Madrid latest transfer news left Ronaldo’s former team-mates stunned, and one player who is definitely going to miss linking up with the Portuguese star is Croatian midfielder Luka Modric. Who since joining the Spanish capital club has managed to form an almost telepathic understanding with the 33-year-old.
Luka Modric going through a purple patch like no other
With Ronaldo departing the Santiago Bernabeu this summer, we are surely in for a very very busy next few weeks and it’s pretty clear that Real Madrid transfer news is going to dominate the papers around Europe but even around the world.
Luka Modric is currently going through the best period of his playing career. After helping Real Madrid win their 3rd consecutive Champions League title in May and has now led Croatia to the 2018 FIFA World Cup Final, where they will be taking on France, hoping to lift their first ever World Cup.
Speaking after Croatia 2-1 victory over England, Modric spoke about his team’s achievement and the dream of lifting the World Cup in Moscow on July 15th. He said, “For a country like Croatia it’s something historic to be in a World Cup final. We have a very tough opponent in the final, I think it’s harder than England, I think it’s the toughest opponent in this World Cup.”
Modric wanted Ronaldo to stay at Real Madrid, even when the rumours of Juventus started surfacing in public
After the gruelling semi-final against England, Modric also took out time to speak about his friend and former Real Madrid team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo’s move to Juventus. “I said that Cristiano would stay because it was my desire, I did not know anything, Cristiano is unique and it’s a shame he leaves, I wish him well, except when he plays against Madrid.” I appreciate everything he did for Madrid,” the 32-year-old said.
Following Croatia’s brilliant run in Russia, there are murmurs mentioning Luka Modric as one of the competitors for the Ballon d’Or this year along with the usual two Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. However, the midfielder himself isn’t thinking too deep on those lines and has made it clear that his main focus is winning the World Cup for his country, their first ever in footballing history.
He said, “For me it’s not important, I already said it, my only wish is to raise the cup for Croatia.”
Real Madrid Transfer Update suggests that the Spanish capital club will be going in big this summer in order to fill the massive gulf that has been left by the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo. There have been rumours suggesting that Florentino Perez and new boss Julen Lopetegui are eyeing either one of Neymar, Kylian Mbappe or Eden Hazard.
Over the past one week, its become very clear that Real Madrid are going to splurging a big amount in the coming 2-3 weeks in order to restrengthen their team which can compete for the League title against the likes of Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. Real Madrid News Today suggest that Ronaldo’s former team-mates have slowly come to terms with Ronaldo’s departure but there is no doubt that for Luka Modric, it’s only the World Cup Final that matters at the moment.
