- In latest Neymar transfer news, the Brazilian star is having doubts about joining Real Madrid this summer
- With Cristiano Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane out of the club, Neymar feels he will be joining a project which will start from the scratch
Cristiano Ronaldo‘s move to Juventus was expected to create a domino effect where Neymar had been earmarked as the Portuguese superstar’s successor at Real Madrid. However, things have a taken a turn for the worse as the Paris Saint Germain player is now considering staying put in the French capital this summer.
As per a report in Spanish daily Mundo Deportivo, Neymar wanted to join Real Madrid with Ronaldo as a teammate and headline the capital club’s project to dominate football in Spain and in Europe. His intent was to play alongside the 33-year-old for a year or two before taking over as the club’s undisputed star player.
Neymar unwilling to join a project which will start from the scratch
The idea was a bit similar to what Neymar experienced during his time at Barcelona, but in a shorter span of time. But the departure of Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane‘s resignation after the Champions League final in May would force the Brazilian captain to join a project which will now start from the scratch under new boss Julen Lopetegui, without the support of a player of Ronaldo’s calibre and with several other unknown factors. Neymar deems the situation as too risky and is therefore willing to buckle down and stay put at PSG for the foreseeable future.
Real Madrid, on their part, had earlier planned on signing Neymar in the summer of 2019 but with Ronaldo moving on to seek newer pastures, president Florentino Perez is now looking for an able replacement for his star man of nine years and Neymar has obviously emerged as a prime candidate in the picture.
Perez has been fascinated with Neymar since he arrived in Spain with Barcelona and even sent several emissaries to London in early June to have a word with Neymar’s entourage. Back then, Neymar is said to have been seduced by the prospect of moving to Santiago Bernabeu. But the PSG superstar also had a positive first meeting with new boss Thomas Tuchel, who sold him his offensive football philosophy which is completely opposite to Unai Emery’s defensive approach to the game.
PSG going all out to keep Neymar at the club
In addition to the German tactician’s positive first impression, another important factor to be kept in mind is that the Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, has handpicked Neymar to be the face of 2022 World Cup and is not willing to draw a plan B in any case. PSG president Al-Khelafi is the Emir’s right-hand man in Paris and has already brought in a ‘winner’ like Gianluigi Buffon to go with the signing of Bruno Mazziotti, the physiotherapist of Brazilian national team. Further, recent reports have also emerged that PSG might even look to tempt Neymar’s good friend Philippe Coutinho to the club this summer.
The French champions have also reportedly offered a massive sum of €270 million to Barcelona through Coutinho’s agent, but the offer was out-rightly rejected by the Camp Nou board. Perez, who has been taken aback by the whole ‘Ronaldo-Neymar situation’, yesterday sent a representative to Brazil on an urgent basis so as to once again ‘seduce’ Neymar and secure his signing this summer.
