- Italian daily La Gazetta dello Sport has suggested the possibility of an upcoming meeting between super agent Jorge Mendes and Real Madrid
- This meeting could seal the deal as far as Cristiano Ronaldo’s move to Juventus is concerned
Cristiano Ronaldo‘s move to Juventus could be finalised in the next couple of days as his agent Jorge Mendes is set to meet Real Madrid bosses in a bid to speed up negotiations and iron out the minor differences which are holding the deal from going through. The Serie A champions are in no mood to let the opportunity of getting the ‘world’s best player’ onboard after coming so close.
Italian daily La Gazzetta dello Sport provided an update on the whole situation by reporting that Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is now resigned to losing his star man leave the club but he is adamant on not emerging as a loser in this deal. Perez is well aware of the fact that he heads the biggest football club on this planet and cannot afford to be cornered by anyone.
While the negotiations moved at a frantic pace throughout the course of this week, things slowed down considerably as the weekend set in and it was revealed that Ronaldo’s Italian sojourn could take some more time. The whole deal was set in motion when super agent Jorge Mendes sat down for a meeting with Jose Angel Sanchez, regarded as the right hand man of Florentino Perez. The two met on Wednesday and came to the conclusion that Ronaldo’s relationship with his current club was beyond repair.
La Gazzetta dello Sport’s report further states that the situation must be seen from three different viewpoints now. That of Real Madrid, Juventus and the Cristiano himself.
The Real Madrid point of view
Real’s stand on letting their most prized asset leave is the most important as they will have to seek an able replacement and at a time when Zinedine Zidane has also left the club. This is where president Perez comes in as he has formed an imaginary “wall” which Ronaldo must jump before he moves to Turin. The construction magnate wants more than €100 million for his superstar forward and Juventus chairman Andrea Agnelli is believed to be happy to meet every possible demand to make the deal happen.
Above all, Perez also wants Ronaldo to own up to his desire of leaving the club and address the media to explain his reasons clearly. On Tuesday, Madrid’s Board of Directors will meet to discuss the club’s financial closing. Perez, as was the case when Arrigo Sacchi came in as technical director in 2004 and Jose Mourinho joined as manager in 2010, wants the board members to have prior knowledge of Ronaldo’s imminent transfer before it is announced to the world.
The Cristiano Ronaldo point of view
After the end of Portugal’s 2018 FIFA World Cup campaign, the 33-year-old forward went to Greece with his family and is currently holidaying in Navarino. Apparently, he is waiting ever so quietly and letting his agent do all the talking. After all, Ronaldo has had a tough and long seasons and deserves all the rest. In his head, he is now looking forward to linking up Juventus and his new teammates on their pre-season of the United States later this month.
To elaborate on this news, Ronaldo has already communicated to his long-time agent Mendes that he is done with Real Madrid. The Portuguese skipper is unhappy about how the club never defended him during his run-in with the Spanish tax authorities. While he was also perturbed at the likes of Lionel Messi and Neymar earning much more than him, it is respect that Ronaldo craves and he has been seduced by Juve boss Agnelli’s show of affection.
If he makes the move to Juventus, Ronaldo stands to make €30 million a year which is almost at par with Real’s latest offer. However, he is drawn by the fact that Turin would treat him as a king and the most loved man in the entire city. This show of respect and love makes all the difference for him.
The Juventus point of view
The city of Turin waits anxiously. There have so many contrasting reports over the last few days that the Juventus fans have reached a stage where they don’t want to believe anything prematurely. So much so there were even rumours of Cristiano’s arrival at Milan’s Linate airport but what transpired was a massive disappointment and has turned into a joke on the internet as the footballer who walked out of the airport was Fabio Borini.
On Saturday, half of Italy’s population even spoke about a pair of boxers as the official website of the player’s undergarments line ‘CR7’ published an image of Cristiano standing in front of a ‘Bianconeri’ background and people were quick to pronounce two plus two as more than four.
All said and done, what might potentially work in Juventus’ favour here is the fact that they have maintained a point of contact with Jorge Mendes from the very beginning and they know that they have a skilled master negotiator on their side. The famous super agent might just do the trick for the Old Lady.
