  • Di Maria was about to be sold to Manchester United at that time and didn’t want their asset damaged after he suffered an injury in the quarter-finals

Argentina’s 2014 FIFA World Cup Final defeat was traumatic for a lot of players but one player who was completely distraught even before the final kicked off was midfielder Angel di Maria. The 30-year-old who was only 26 at that time missed the Final and had to watch from the bench after he had torn his thigh muscle in the quarter-finals.

Angel di Maria’s World Cup dream was over before the Final kicked-off

Argentina who qualified after winning the quarter-final against Costa Rica and then the Netherlands on penalties in the semi-final were heavily reliant on their star players like Lionel Messi and Angel di Maria to take them to the ultimate glory.

Di Maria, who missed the semi-final encounter was ready to take injections in order to be available for the final showdown against Germany at the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro. However, his dreams were cut short by his employers at that time Real Madrid as they stopped him from lining up for the Argentinian national team in the Final.

As per strong rumours at that time, Di Maria was on his way to Old Trafford from Bernabeu as the Spanish giants were looking to bring in James Rodriguez and had to create space for him. This Latest World Cup News or revelation you can call it comes just hours before Argentina all-important group stage encounter against Nigeria in the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

In latest FIFA World Cup 2018 News, Angel di Maria wrote on The Player’s Tribune, how his dream to play in the World Cup Final was destroyed by Real Madrid as they didn’t want their asset getting damaged before his eventual sale to Manchester United.

Di Maria writes, “It was the morning of the 2014 World Cup Final, at exactly 11am and I was sitting on the trainer’s table about to get an injection in my leg. I had torn my thigh muscle in the quarter-finals, but with painkillers, I could run without feeling anything,’ he wrote.

‘I told our trainers these exact words: “If I break, then let me keep breaking. I don’t care. I just want to be able to play”. So I was putting ice on my leg when our team doctor, Daniel Martínez, came into the room holding this envelope, and he said “Look, Ángel, this paper came from Real Madrid.”

‘I said “What are you talking about?” He said “Well, they’re saying you’re not in any condition to play. So they are forcing us to not let you play today.”

‘I immediately knew what was happening. Everybody had heard the rumours that Real wanted to sign James Rodríguez after the World Cup, and I knew that they were going to sell me to make room for him.

‘So they didn’t want their asset to be damaged. It was that simple. That’s the business of football that people do not always see. I told Daniel to give me the letter. I didn’t even open it. I just ripped it into pieces.’

Angel di Maria is looking to make for 2014 this year starting with Nigeria

Following Di Maria hearing the news, he spoke to Argentina manager Alejandro Sabella and requested him to pick players who he thought suited his plans. But the pleading by the former Manchester United didn’t work as he was dropped from the starting XI and eventually watched from the bench as Mario Gotze scored the winning goal for Germany to win the World Cup.

Angel di Maria is currently preparing with the Argentina national team in Russia. They are going to play Nigeria tonight in what is going to be a do or die encounter for both the sides. The PSG playmaker was dropped from the line-up against Croatia but is expected to come back into the starting XI tonight as Argentina look to sneak into the knock-out round.
