- Cristiano Ronaldo scored his career’s 51st hat-trick against Spain in Portugal opening Group B encounter in 2018 FIFA World Cup
- His 2nd goal came due to a horrible mistake by David de Gea in the closing stages of the 1st half
- De Gea’s club manager Jose Mourinho has come out in full support of the Spanish number 1
Cristiano Ronaldo stole the show with a brilliant hat-trick in Portugal’s opening Group B encounter against Spain in 2018 FIFA World Cup yesterday (June 15th) but what caught a lot of people’s attention around the world was the performance of Spain’s goalkeeper David de Gea’s performance.
After arguing with the referee regarding the decision to award Portugal a penalty in opening minutes, De Gea went over to the penalty spot and did his best to distract Ronaldo but once the Portuguese captain started his stride, everyone watching knew what was going to be the outcome. However, what left people stunned was De Gea’s poor handling of Ronaldo’s left-footed shot in the closing stages of the 1st half, which gave Portugal an expected lead going into the break.
Ronaldo steals the show as De Gea has a shocker
Over the past 5 years, David de Gea has won the Manchester United Player of the Season 4 times and is widely regarded the best goal-keeper in the world, which is why it is shocking to see him make such a poor mistake on his World Cup debut for Spain.
Ronaldo completed the humiliation for De Gea on the night by producing a world-class free-kick, during the final few minutes of the match. Ronaldo’s inch-perfect free-kick from the edge of the box left the Spanish number 1 rooted to his spot as he watched the ball sail into the top corner.
Even though the night ended at 3-3, there is no doubt that Ronaldo is highly motivated this year to make sure that he gives his 100% to win that elusive World Cup title with Portugal, following their 2016 EURO’s heroics. He became only the 4th player to score in 4 World Cups and 1st player to score a goal in 8 international tournaments.
Jose Mourinho comes to David de Gea’s rescue
David de Gea is arguably the best goalkeeper in the world at the moment and even though he made that horrible mistake in the 1st half against Portugal, very few will doubt his talent or abilities and one man who is certain to back him till the end is Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho, for whom the Spanish international has been fantastic.
In Latest Manchester United news, Jose Mourinho currently on punditry duty for Russian channel RT spoke after Spain and Portugal’s match and said, “It’s my boy, it hurts me to say but he knows it’s a bad mistake. It’s a mistake he doesn’t make with us, United – player of the season, fantastic performances. But that happens to the best”
“The good thing with the best is that in the next match he will be there – not afraid, confident to go & ready to help his team. It is a goal with David’s face,” Mourinho further added.
David de Gea will now need to pick up himself and dust himself off because the World Cup is still very much on and given his performances in the recent past, there will come a time when he will need to be at his best to pull off saves that keep his team in the match. The 27-year-old is a hugely talented player and we hope that the Spanish management and his team-mates help him pull through this horrible experience that he had against Cristiano Ronaldo.
