  • England will face competition from Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay combined challenge, a century after first World Cup.

In FIFA World Cup Latest News, the USA, Mexico and Canada won the rights to host the 2026 World Cup after submitted a ‘United’ bid and beating 2nd contender Morocco by 134 votes to 65 this week. At the same time, the sentiment towards bringing the tournament back to Europe and specifically England in 2030 also garnered support from the likes of UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin and England’s FIFA Council representative David Gill.

England will be bidding to host the World Cup after 64 years

There is a strong sentiment among the hierarchy at FIFA and in UEFA, that the tournament should return to Europe soon after the 2026 World Cup in USA, Mexico and Canada and England who have not hosted the tournament since 64 years should be given the opportunity being the leader in showcasing the global game.

The 2018 FIFA World Cup will be kick-off in just a few hours at the Luzhniki Stadium with hosts Russia taking on Saudi Arabia. England’s plans to bid for 2030 FIFA World Cup have come about due to the new transparent voting process that took place for the 2026 World Cup during FIFA annual conference in Moscow on Wednesday (June 13th).

The announcement of the winner of 2026 World Cup bid was hugely different from the 2010 campaign of England to host the 2018 World Cup, where there huge doubts regarding corruption and suspicious play. This time around, every federations vote was made public in order to maintain the transparency in the system and not allow parties to use unfair means to influence other football federations.

2026 bidding process gives England the confidence to put their name in the hat for 2030

The fact that the joint bid by USA, Mexico and Canada won the voting round also gave a huge boost to England, as it became clear that only bids who are superior on technical grounds and will score highly in the FIFA evaluation report. England, as we all know, is the home of Football and is home to some of the worlds best stadiums and training grounds which should work in their favour when the time comes to vote.

Speaking about England’s plan to bid for 2030, UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin said, “England has a fantastic infrastructure, experience and everything else. As much as we are trying to be neutral now we will certainly not be neutral if anyone from Europe bids. Greg Clarke has changed that image very much, he’s travelling around, he’s showing a different face and I think he’s very popular in Europe. The English FA is doing well.”

England’s FIFA Council representative David Gill also spoke about the new transparent system. He said, “It does give us great confidence that the voting procedures now in place are appropriate and relevant.”

England are most likely to face their toughest challenge from a combined South American proposal by Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay. Uruguay was the first country to host the FIFA World Cup and will drive their bid for 2030 on the sentiment of hosting the tournament on the 100 year anniversary of that first FIFA World Cup in 1930.

However, the general feeling around FIFA Council is to not be distracted by emotional sentiments rather focus on the economics, which was badly skewed during Brazils hosting of the 2014 World Cup. The English FA will work over the course of next 12 months on the feasibility of a World Cup bid and how they could prove their candidature above the joint bid by Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay.
