With France getting ready for the 2018 FIFA World Cup and striker Antoine Griezmann being one of the highlight players for the team, it is only heartwarming to even imagine the Atletico Madrid star being on the other end of the action. Recently, a video emerged on the social media which showed Griezmann when he was a 7-year-old kid, obsessed about his country’s football team, France, and getting autographs from the then-footballing stars of the French national team, who were to appear at the 1998 FIFA World Cup and win it.
Seven-year-old Griezmann collects autographs of French footballers at the 1998 FIFA World Cup
In the video which surfaced on Twitter, Antoine Griezmann is seen as a seven-year-old kid wearing France shirt with No. 7 on back, a number which he would go on to wear when he plays the sport he had always loved, for the team he had always loved – France.
The video shows Griezmann and his young friend going to players they revere in the France team. The kid chips in with ‘Barthez’ and takes a football from player to player to collect their autographs.
The duo are being interviewed at the same time, which is why the footage was recorded in the first place. They are reeling off names of their favourite players as the presenter is heard saying, “They are so cute we cannot refuse them anything.”
It’s the heartwarming footage of the France-obsessed kid from 1998, which makes one acknowledge the miracle that would take place when that same kid will be appearing at the 2018 FIFA World Cup for France, still donning the No. 7.
From that point where he was collecting signatures, the football fanatic has come a long way, to now signing the autographs for others, and carrying the hopes of the whole nation on his shoulders. The Atletico Madrid forward will be a key man in Russia when they take on Australia on June 16 in their first group-stage fixture of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
Griezmann might be able to emulate the performances of the France ’98 side, and bring the story full circle – from being a die-hard fan of the France team in the 16th edition of the World Cup to being the star of the France team at the 21st edition of the World Cup – fulfilling his childhood dreams.
