In latest Chelsea transfer news, a long-term target Thomas Lemar is all set to join Atletico Madrid this summer from AS Monaco after the two clubs reached an agreement rumoured to be around €72m plus bonuses.
Lemar is all set to join Diego Simone’s team on a 5-year deal once he completes his break following France’s participation in the World Cup. The Spanish capital club announced yesterday that they had reached an agreement with AS Monaco in principle for the transfer of the 22-year-old and the final agreement between the two clubs will be reached in the coming few weeks.
Lemar’s move to Atletico Madrid a big setback for Chelsea
This piece of Atletico Madrid Transfer News is a big setback for Chelsea, who had been monitoring him for quite some time now but needed more clarity on their managerial position before a making a formal move from him.
This is not the first time Atletico have made a formal bid for him. In 2015, they made a bid of 25 M € (+ 5 M €) only for it to be rejected straight away. In 2017, they came back, however, a transfer ban levied on them at that moment prevented them from going through with the deal.
Chance for Lemar to link up with his French team-mate Antoine Griezmann
If Atletico Madrid have their way this summer French team-mate Antoine Griezmann and Thomas Lemar would be starting together once the next season starts. However, the latest Atletico Madrid News is that Griezmann has made a decision, but it will be made public only after the World Cup gets over, as the Frenchman’s focus is firmly on taking Les Bleus to their 2nd World Cup triumph.
Thomas Lemar will be a welcome addition to the Atletico Madrid squad, which had started to look rugged last season and lacked depth. They finished 3rd in their group in the Champions League but then did go on to beat Marseille in the Final of the Europa League thanks to the heroics of the start player Griezmann.
Lemar is expected to occupy the left wing, which is currently home to Spanish international Koke, but he could always shift to the right wing in order to vacate space for the new purchase. Griezmann was reportedly frustrated with the kind of pressure that was on him to take the team over the line along with Diego Costa but now with Lemar’s arrival, he will have a familiar friend helping him bang in goals, that is if the 27-year-old stays back in Madrid.
The next Champions League Final will be held at Atletico Madrid’s spanking new stadium Wanda Metropolitano and after going out in the group stages last season, the team would like nothing more than participating in a European Final at their home ground. After the failures in 2014 and 2016, the team is prepared to mount a proper challenge for European glory this season and Thomas Lemar will be a key player in those plans now.
The key Chelsea news that is everyone is waiting for right now is whether Antonio Conte will remain as the manager at Stamford Bridge at the start of next season amidst strong rumours that the Chelsea board are considering sacking him after his team failed to qualify for the Champions League finishing 5th on the points table.
