Andre Iniesta bid an emotional goodbye to Barcelona at the end of last season after joining them at the age of 12 and playing 674 matches for the Catalan. The Spanish vice-captain is currently preparing with the national team ahead of their World Cup opener on June 15th against Portugal. Earlier this month, the 34-year-old announced that he will be joining Japanese side, Vissel Kobe after signing a 3-year deal of around £22.5m per year.

With the opening game against Portugal just a few days away, Iniesta sat down with the press to discuss his past with Barcelona, present with Spanish national team and the future in Japan.

The 2010 World Cup winning goal-scorer also took the opportunity to clear the rumours that appeared in England linking him Manchester City as a player or as an assistant coach to Pep Guardiola, replacing former Arsenal midfielder Mikel Arteta.  The former Barcelona midfielder made it clear that there was no contact between him and Guardiola, in fact that latter didn’t even call him and the rumours were completely baseless.

Rumours linking Iniesta to Manchester City are baseless

In latest Manchester City news, Iniesta spoke about reports linking him with a move to Manchester City following his exit from Barcelona. The 34-year-old said,“Pep Guardiola never called me. There were zero conversations. I was leaving Barça to leave Europe, so this information made no sense,”

As reported by the Spanish newspaper, AS Marca, Iniesta also spoke about his future with the Spanish national team and indicated that this could be his last international appearance. He said, “I will never close one hundred percent the door of the National Team after the World Cup, but everything indicates that this will be the case ”

During his time with Barcelona, Andre Iniesta enjoyed a hugely successful career winning nine La Liga titles, alongside four Champions League wins and six Copa del Rey crowns. He was visibly overcome with emotion while announcing his decision to leave the club after 22 years during a press conference.

Emotional rollercoaster for Iniesta in the past few weeks

Speaking about his final few moments with Catalans, Iniesta said, “These weeks of farewell have been very intense, emotionally very powerful, and I have tasted them to the fullest.”

The Barcelona also took time to give his viewpoint on FC Barcelona latest news which sees them being heavily linked with French international Antoine Griezmann. Iniesta said, “Sometimes it seems that you can go to Barça, others that stay at Atlético … I would sign him because he is a unique player”.
