The eleventh season of the Indian Premier League is nearing the playoff stage and it cannot get more chaotic. After having played 49 matches, six of the eight Indian Premier League teams are still in contention to end up in the playoff IPL 2018 stage of the competition, something which is not seen often in the Indian T20 League. In this article, as the two IPL Playoff teams 2018 (CSK & SRH) book their spot in the Playoff IPL 2018, we look at the IPL playoff chances 2018 for the other teams, for example, KKR playoff chances, MI playoff chances, RCB playoff chances, KXIP playoff chances, RR playoff chances and DD playoff chances.
In what has been a closely-fought IPL season, only two teams – Sunrisers Hyderabad and Chennai Super Kings – have booked their spot in the final four, which means that the remaining two spots are up for grabs, and five teams fighting hard amongst themselves to qualify.
As seven round-robin matches of IPL 2018 are still remaining, we take a look at the IPL playoff chances 2018 for IPL teams, and discuss what needs to happen for each of the franchise to make the Playoff IPL 2018.
Kolkata Knight Riders (3rd): KKR Playoff chances
Matches: 13 | Won: 7 | Lost: 6 | Points: 14 | NRR: -0.096
Remaining match against : Sunrisers Hyderabad
The Dinesh Karthik-led Kolkata Knight Riders are in a prime position to secure one of the two remaining playoff spots, as they defeated Mumbai Indians in their last clash by six wickets, earning two points more than the next ranked team in the IPL 2018 table, i.e. Rajasthan Royals (4th). KKR playoff chances are high, as the team is now remaining to play their last match against table-toppers Sunrisers Hyderabad, a win against whom would guarantee KKR a spot in the Playoff IPL 2018.
However, if KKR manage to lose their last match, then the KKR playoff chances depend upon how the results for Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab turn out to be, as KKR could can slip out of the Playoff IPL 2018 if RR and KXIP win their last matches by big margins.
Rajasthan Royals (4th): RR Playoff chances
Matches: 13 | Won: 6 | Lost: 7 | Points: 12 | NRR: -0.399
Remaining match against : Royal Challengers Bangalore
Rajasthan Royals have returned after a break of two years in IPL 2018, and being mentored by the Australia great Shane Warne have resulted in the team to sit at the fourth spot in the IPL 2018 table. A good place to be in the later phase of the tournament. RR clinched three straight victories with the help of English cricketer Jos Buttler’s stunning in-form batting which led the slow-starters to pick up pace and be in contention for the playoff IPL 2018 race.
Like KKR, the Rajasthan Royals also have one remaining match against fellow Playoff IPL 2018 contender Royal Challengers Bangalore, with a victory giving RR a slight edge over their closest competitor – Kings XI Punjab – due to a superior net run rate, thanks to Buttler. However, if RR lose to Virat Kohli captained RCB, they will then need Mumbai Indians to lose both of their remaining matches in order to have any chances of making it to the qualifiers.
Kings XI Punjab (5th): KXIP Playoff chances
Matches: 12 | Won: 6 | Lost: 6 | Points: 12 | NRR: -0.518
Remaining matches against: Mumbai Indians (Thursday), Chennai Super Kings (Monday)
After winning five of their first six matches and being well cemented in the top four, Brad Hodge-coached team suffered massive defeats in the next 6 games, with just one win against Rajasthan Royals, which saw them slip out of the top four to No.5. The most recent loss for KXIP came against RCB, which was a 10-wicket sweep by the Virat Kohli-led team.
Kings XI Punjab haven’t featured in the qualifiers since the 2014 edition, and have two matches remaining to get themselves back in the Playoff IPL 2018 race, with two victories guaranteeing them a spot in the top four. However, if KXIP lose a single match out of the remaining two, the Ravichandran Ashwin-led side would need both the Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians to lose a match, while facing two defeats will wrap up the season for KXIP.
Mumbai Indians (6th): MI Playoff chances
Matches: 12 | Won: 5 | Lost: 7 | Points: 10 | NRR: +0.405
Remaining matches against: Kings XI Punjab (Thursday), Delhi Daredevils (Sunday)
The defending champions of the IPL title started their IPL 2018 campaign slower than expected, but revived the MI playoff chances after the Rohit Sharma-led side made a run of three straight victories. In the process of MI revival in IPL 2018, the MI opening pair of Suryakumar Yadav and Evin Lewis have played pivotal roles, but they still need to keep working harder and in tandem with the Pandya brothers and Mayank Markande to make their way to the qualifiers.
In order to boost their IPL playoff chances, Mumbai Indians would need to defeat Kings XI Punjab in their next fixture (and Delhi Daredevils in the last clash), and would need KXIP and Rajasthan Royals both, to lose their final matches. While MI lost some significant fixtures early on, it is their net run rate which is highest among all the remaining teams, which keeps their IPL Playoff chances 2018 alive.
Royal Challengers Bangalore (7th): RCB playoff chances
Matches: 12 | Won: 5 | Lost: 7 | Points: 10 | NRR: +0.218
Remaining fixtures against : Sunrisers Hyderabad (Friday), Rajasthan Royals (Saturday)
Despite a really tough hike to the Playoff IPL 2018, the Royal Challengers Bangalore, while apparently off the track, still have a mathematical chance to revive their IPL Playoff chances 2018. RCB face a lot of odds on their way to increase the RCB playoff chances, and they’ll need a series of results to fall in their favour.
RCB need Mumbai to defeat Kings XI Punjab in their next clash, and would then require KXIP and Mumbai Indians to both lose in their final fixtures, in order for RCB to land in the top four. In addition, the Kohli and ABD studded team would need to win both of their matches with a good net run rate to increase their IPL playoff chances 2018.
Virat Kohli’s side have ended up in the qualifiers on just three occasions in their 11-year IPL history, and are yet to win a title in the tournament.
Delhi Daredevils (8th): DD playoff chances
Delhi Daredevils have faced way lot of troubles in their IPL 2018 campaign, facing upsetting defeats early on, midway and in the later stages of the tournament. With 3 wins in 12 matches and two remaining matches against CSK and MI, the Shreyas Iyer-led team has virtually no chances to make it to the Playoff IPL 2018, meaning that DD have zero IPL playoff chances 2018. The team management needs to learn from their mistakes, as buying Gautam Gambhir and naming him the captain of the side didn’t help their cause, which saw Gambhir stepping down from the post and handing it over to the young gun Shreyas Iyer.
