In the latest Chelsea transfer news or Chelsea latest transfer news, Italian club AS Roma’s boss Eusebio Di Francesco while speaking in a television interview on the show Tiki Taka (via –Tutto Mercato web), confirmed that his club was involved in negotiations with Chelsea in January over the possible transfer of Eden Dzeko. For those who don’t remember before the arrival of Olivier Giroud to Stamford, the Blues were scampering to find a suitable back-up for lead striker Alvaro Morata.
In the winter transfer window, Chelsea had gone through a list of strikers before narrowing down of the Eden Dzeko, who had previously spent 5 seasons at 2017-2018 EPL Champions Manchester City from 2011 to 2016 before securing a €11m move to AS Roma. The 32-year-old won the Golden Boot award in the Serie A for the 2016-2017 season after scoring 29 goals in 37 matches.
Speaking about the transfer negotiations with Chelsea in January, Francesco said,“We all know that in January there was a negotiation, but he always proved to be a professional, even when he was on the pitch at the time An authentic man-team, not only very strong from a tactical and technical point of view.”
Speaking soon after the winter transfer window closed, Dzeko had said, “It’s true that negotiations were being conducted, and that’s all I can say on the subject. There was a lot of speculation, as well as false and even funny claims. I was really flattered by the interest from Chelsea, a club I really respect and admire. In the end I’m happy to stay at AS Roma because Rome has become my home and an indelible part of my life.”
Eden Dzeko Roma contract is till 2020 but given his 24 goal haul in all competitions in the 2017-2018 season, the Italian club will be keen to extend that contract even further as soon as possible in order to keep the prying eyes away from their star striker. Back in January, Chelsea were trying to secure a deal for the Bosnian and his Roma team-mate Emerson Palmieri.
However, even though Dzeko’s negotiations stalled at the last moment, the London club were able to bring in Palmieri for a reported fee of €20m. At the moment, Dzeko is happy at his current club and now his move to Chelsea looks unlikely given that the club have a policy of not giving long-term contracts to players of 30, something the forward might be apprehensive about. The English transfer window will be opening 17th May (Thursday) and we can expect Chelsea to be very busy this summer as they look to regain their English Premier League lost crown from Manchester City next season.
