- According to reports, Preity Zinta and Virender Sehwag were involved in a verbal spat following KXIP’s defeat against RR
- After 5 of their first 6 matches, KXIP have lost 3 of their last 4 and are currently 3rd in the points table
- This altercation with the owner could spell the end of Sehwag’s association with the team
After a brilliant start to their IPL 2018 campaign, Kings XI Punjab have stuttered a bit in the last 4 matches winning just 1. There has been some tinkering down with the team selection and batting positions but that doesn’t seem to have worked creating even further tensions in the camp. Although KXIP are 3rd on the points table with 12 points and should make it to the playoffs with quite a bit of ease, the management will be worried about the loss of momentum they have suffered right in the business end of the tournament. After the initial few weeks, KXIP were looking like the favourites to lift their 1st IPL Trophy this year but with this dip in form, the season might end up with another disappointing finish.
According to latest reports in Mumbai Mirror, Kings XI Punjab owner Preity Zinta and Chief mentor Virender Sehwag were involved in a verbal spat following KXIP’s 15 run defeat against Rajasthan Royals on May 8th. According to the piece, Preity let out a tirade of verbal volleys against Sehwag, after her team failed to chase down the target of 156 against a much lower ranked side Rajasthan Royals.
Preity Zinta not happy with the changes in the side following what was a brilliant start for KXIP
According to those who were present when this conversation occurred reported that the owner wasn’t happy with the tactics being using the coaching staff in the previous few matches. She wasn’t pleased to see so many strategic changes being made, which has eventually cost the team over the past 4 matches. “Against Rajasthan Royals, skipper Ravichandran Ashwin was sent in at No 3, ahead of more accomplished batsmen such as Karun Nair and Manoj Tiwari. The move backfired as Ashwin fell for a duck, and Preity launched into Sehwag for the decision,” an unnamed KXIP official said as quoted by Mumbai Mirror.
Virender Sehwag did try and diffuse the situation but Preity wasn’t ready to listen especially after the tinkering in the batting line-up against Rajasthan Royals, which led to their 3rd defeat in 4 games. According to the report in Mirror, Sehwag’s 5-year long association with the Kings XI Punjab franchise could come to end at the end of the season, as he is fed up of the owner interfering in his job. “Viru had told the other owners to rein in Preity. He told the owners that he’ll not comment on Preity’s acting chops and she should refrain from talking about his cricketing acumen,” the official was quoted as saying.
This altercation could mean the end of Sehwag’s association with KXIP
If Sehwag would to resign, it would definitely not come at this stage, given the franchise is just inches away from playoff qualification and any disturbance between the staff and the owners could lead to major distractions for the players. Sehwag was part of the KXIP franchise even as a player. In the 2015 season, he was the opener in the side following which he took up the coaching job. This is not the first time we have had reports of Preity Zinta taking it upon herself to find out answers from the management. In 2016, the same newspaper reported that Zinta had threatened former KXIP coach Sanjay Bangar with sacking after her side had suffered a string of failures.
Kings XI Punjab are currently preparing to face Kolkata Knight Riders on 12th May at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore.
