Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are really making their mark in IPL 2018, after being suspended for two years. On their return to the Indian Premier League, CSK played in the IPL 2018 opening clash against the IPL title defending champions Mumbai Indians, and dominated the fixture, hinting that the ‘Yellow brigade’ was here to take over. And having gone midway through IPL 2018 season, the MS Dhoni-led CSK have become the 2nd team in domestic T20 cricket to register 100 wins, after Mumbai Indians.
Chennai Super Kings register 100th win, become 2nd team to do so in T20 format after Mumbai Indians
CSK played against Delhi Daredevils on April 30 at their newly-designated home ground, Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) Stadium, and what followed was an intense thriller and a test of nerves, which ultimately ended in CSK making IPL and T20 cricket history, registering their 100th win.
In achieving the historic feat, the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings became only the second team to win 100 T20 cricket fixtures in domestic cricket worldwide after Mumbai Indians. Resultantly, the ‘Yellow Brigade’ also muscled their way to the top of the IPL 2018 points table after their 13-run victory against Delhi Daredevils at Pune’s MCA Stadium.
Delhi Daredevils, who have been found struggling hard to get their team balance right, recently witnessed Gautam Gambhir step down as the team captain, making way for the young gun Shreyas Iyer to take up the leadership of the team. In the clash against CSK, DD had won the toss choosing to bowl first. The Delhi bowlers could not dominate the CSK batsmen, as Shane Watson, Faf du Plessis, Ambati Rayudu and MS Dhoni set up a challenging score of 211 runs for Delhi to try and chase.
Coming in to bat, Daredevils batsmen fought hard but struggled harder, as Vijay Shankar’s 54 and Rishabh Pant’s 79 could not take the team to the other side of the line.
Mumbai Indians, the first team to win 100 T20 domestic matches
Three-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians, who have won the title in 2013, 2015 and 2017, are the first team to register 100 wins. In total, the Rohit Sharma-led side has won 104 out of 186 matches they have played so far, losing 79.
CSK, on the other hand, hit the century mark on the back of two power-packed half centuries from opening batsman Shane Watson and team skipper MS Dhoni. While Watson once again displayed his signature power-hitting on his way to a fiery 78 off just 40 balls, Dhoni provided the platform for a perfect finish with his 22-ball 51, taking the team to a good final score of 211.
In the process, CSK, who have two IPL titles to their name, won the most number of encounters against Royal Challengers Bangalore (14), followed by Delhi Daredevils, Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals (12 each).
Three IPL teams in the list of top 10 most wins
While Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings now have 100+ wins in domestic T20 cricket, the other Indian Premier League (IPL) team to feature in top 10 list of most number of wins registered in the Twenty20 format is Kolkata Knight Riders. With 90 wins in 172 matches, KKR are currently holding the seventh position in the list.
The other seven teams to make it to the top 10 of the list are English county cricket teams – Hampshire, Lancashire, Nottinghamshire, Warwickshire, Surrey, Essex and Somerset.
