Having been bought for just INR 2 crore, and that to at the third time of asking, not many people felt Chris Gayle could deliver like the seasons gone by. However, the snub by the franchise’s at the IPL 2018 auction, seems to have motivated Gayle even more. Not the first time the Universal Boss has been snubbed at an IPL auction
Even though Chris Gayle is among the best T20 players of all-time, the snub at the 2018 IPL auction wasn’t the first one for the T20 superstars, back in 2011, the now 38-year-old was unsold at the auction only to be brought in by Royal Challengers Bangalore as a replacement for Dirk Nannes after the tournament had started. From their on, he never looked back scoring 3163 runs across seven seasons before again being snubbed prior to this season. Fortunately for Gayle, KXIP had INR 2 crore left in their purse by the end of the auction, which they decided to use to bring Chris Gayle in the squad and what a decision that has turned out to be.
With Kings XI Punjab on a long break before their next encounter against Mumbai Indians on 4th May, Chris Gayle is currently taking some time off with his family. The big West Indian opener spoke to Times of India exclusively during the break and discussed all things cricket and some more. When asked about what the future holds for T20 crickets greatest player, Gayle said,”Just two things: winning the IPL this year and the World Cup for West Indies next year. I believe West Indies have a big chance of winning the World Cup in 2019. I know we struggled in the qualifiers but now that we’ve made it, our next aim is to win it.”
Chris Gayle ready to step onto the big screen just like Dwayne Bravo
The opener also revealed that like his compatriot Dwayne Bravo, he could too make an appearance in a movie, although not with KXIP owner, Preity Zinta’s help. Gayle said,”Well, not from Preity but a lot of offers have been knocking on the door so it might happen real soon. Then again, I’m a movie star anyway so that doesn’t really make a difference.”
Kings XI Punjab currently sit on the 3rd position in the points table with 5 wins from 7 matches and will now take on Mumbai Indians at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore on May 4th. With no championship wins in the first decade, the franchise is desperate to land their maiden title this season and with players like Chris Gayle, KL Rahul, Aaron Finch, Andre Tye and Mujeeb Zadran in the team, they are superbly well placed to go all the way. Ravi Ashwin, who is leading an IPL team for the first time in his career, has done a superb job till now and isn’t looking at all overawed by the responsibilities.
