The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recommended Team India captain Virat Kohli for the country’s highest sporting honour, i.e. Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award, on Thursday (April 26). The development was confirmed by the BCCI, and it came on to the surface that a few more names from the Indian cricketing circle have been nominated for honorary awards. However, Virat Kohli Khel Ratna is something which every Indian cricket fan must be getting excited to see.

Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award is meant for the sportspersons of the highest calibre, the ones who reach the apex of their game and keep completing historic benchmarks with unreal consistency, something for which Virat Kohli perfectly fits the bill.

Sunil Gavaskar recommended for Dhyan Chand award, Rahul Dravid for Dronacharya award

Apart from Virat Kohli Khel Ratna, former Indian cricketers were also recommended by the BCCI for national honours. To start with, Sunil Gavaskar‘s name has been recommended for Dhyan Chand Award, which is India’s highest award for lifetime achievement in sports and games. While on the other hand, former India cricketer, captain, and the current India U19 coach, Rahul Dravid, has been recommended by the BCCI for Dronacharya Award.

Sunil Gavaskar and Rahul Dravid are also two of the very important figures to have embraced the Indian cricket team in their respective eras, and surely deserve to be honoured by the Government of India.

Shikhar Dhawan and Smriti Mandhana recommended for Arjuna Award

While Virat Kohli Khel Ratna was one recommendation, on the other hand, the BCCI also recommended Shikhar Dhawan and Indian Women cricket star Smriti Mandhana for the Arjuna Award on Wednesday, in recognition of their exuberant performances.

Interestingly, this is not the first time that Virat Kohli’s name has been recommended for the Khel Ratna award by the BCCI, as it was done once before in 2016. However, Kohli had not received the award back then, and it goes to see if the Team India captain who has been shattering cricket records day in and day out, would receive the highest sporting honour this time around.

If Kohli does get the award this time, he would become only the third cricketer to get the Khel Ratna award. The first two cricketers to have been honoured by the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award are – Sachin Tendulkar, who received the award in 1997, and MS Dhoni, who received it in 2007.

The prestigious award is given for the spectacular and most outstanding performance in the field of sports by a sportsperson over a period of four years.

Virat Kohli struggling in IPL 2018

The Royal Challengers Bangalore and their captain Virat Kohli have been found struggling in the IPL 2018 season, despite of acquiring two of the most explosive batsmen, i.e. Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers. RCB went into a clash against Chennai Super Kings on Wednesday at their homeground, M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Scoring 205 runs, RCB could not manage to keep the chasing CSK at bay, as Dhoni and Ambati Rayudu surpassed the RCB scoreline and defeated RCB in their sixth game of the season. Winning a single match out of six clashes, RCB are ranked at no. 6 in the IPL 2018 table standings.

Team India captain, although invincible in the national jersey, looks quite vulnerable in the Indian T20 league currently.
