The ICC World Twenty20, also known as the T20 World Cup, is the international championship of T20 cricket which is organised by the International Cricket Council (ICC). The tournament currently consists of 16 teams, comprising of all ICC full member nations, and other associate or affiliate members chosen through the World T20 Qualifier. In this article, we will look at who won the first T20 World Cup. The first T20 World Cup was played in 2007, and the final of the 1st T20 World Cup was played between India and Pakistan. Speaking about who won the first ever T20 World Cup, it was India, who had ironically become the first T20 World Cup winner. Before getting into the details, let us discuss a little about the tournament and it’s origin.

The 1st T20 World Cup was held in 2007, and it was decided by the ICC that the tournament would take place every two years, except if an ICC Cricket World Cup was taking place in the same year, in which case it was to be held the year before. The 1st T20 World Cup tournament took place in South Africa in 2007, where 12 teams had participated. The teams were divided into four groups of three, then two groups of four (quarter-finals), followed by the semi-finals and the final, which would make one of the teams the first T20 World Cup Winner.

Apart from the 10 full member nations of the ICC which took part in the 1st T20 World Cup, there were two associate members who played in the 1st T20 World Cup as well – Kenya and Scotland. The matches of the 1st T20 World Cup had taken place in three different venues in South Africa – Wanderers, Kingsmead and Newlands. The tournament was a huge success, as it had witnessed world’s best cricketers and fully-packed stadiums. The opening clash of the 1st T20 World Cup took place between West Indies and South Africa, in which Chris Gayle had stormed the South African bowlers, slamming 117 runs off 57 deliveries, including 10 sixes.

In another clash of the 2007 World T20, i.e 1st T20 World Cup, Team India batting bully had hit England‘s Stuart Broad for six straight sixes in an over, with another six in the first ball of the next over, which pushed Yuvraj Singh to register a historic 12-ball fifty. It wasn’t entirely all batsmen-led action however, as Australia pacer Brett Lee claimed the first hat-trick in T20 cricket internationals, playing against Bangladesh.

First T20 World Cup winner: India

Coming to the question: Who won the first T20 World Cup, or, who won the first ever T20 World Cup? The exhilarating tournament resulted in a thrilling final that was to cause a hike in the heartbeats of the audiences from the first ball to the last, as India and Pakistan battled it out to become the first T20 World Cup winner. The match went down to a final-over thriller, with Pakistan needing six from the last four balls.

Despite of the odds against India, the team eventually triumphed as Misbah-ul-Haq’s attempted scoop off Joginder Singh landed in the hands of S. Sreesanth at short fine-leg.
