Star Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has been voted as the Professional Footballers’ Association player of the year for the 2017-18 season. The Egyptian, who has scored 31 goals in the Premier League and looks on course to win the Golden Boot, secured the most votes from his fellow players. The Mohamed Salah POTY award comes as he went head-to-head with Manchester City‘s Premier League-winning midfield maestro Kevin De Bruyne.
With the season drawing to a close after months of intense competition and rivalries, it has been a tradition to sit back and acknowledge the brilliance of individuals who have been better than their peers during the time. The PFA player of the year is one such accolade and it is widely considered to be the pinnacle when it comes to individual recognition in England. To sum it up, the annual award is given to the footballer who is deemed to have played the best during the course of the English season.
Mohamed Salah POTY: 41 goals and counting for the magical Egyptian
Ahead of the ceremony on Sunday night, Salah was clearly the bookies’ favourite to pick up the prize ahead of Kevin De Bruyne, David De Gea, Harry Kane, Leroy Sane and David Silva. The Egyptian has been simply sensational since moving to Anfield from Italian club AS Roma last summer as he has netted in 41 goals in all competitions, while also assisting 11 goals for his teammates in the current campaign.
Speaking on the feat as the first Egyptian to win the award, Mohamed Salah said, as reported by Sky Sports,
“Hopefully I’m not the last one. I’m very proud to win and I’ve worked very hard. It’s a big honour.”

The Mohamed Salah POTY also signifies the kind of effect he has had on the red half of Merseyside under Jurgen Klopp as the Reds will soon be turning out to play their first Champions League semi-final in almost a decade against Salah’s former club, AS Roma. Liverpool are also third in the Premier League points table and are on course to secure elite European football for the next season, much of which has been down to the brilliance of their attacking triumvirate including Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and the magical Mo Salah. The former Chelsea man has also covered up for the departure of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona in January and quite spectacularly.
Mohamed Salah POTY opponent Kevin De Bruyne has also enjoyed a spectacular campaign for Manchester City as the club have marched to the Premier League title in never seen before style. The Belgian playmaker’s technical quality has been a key component in the slick football played by Pep Guardiola’s side, and has registered a league-leading 15 assists so far. He has also contributed eight goals, including a stunning volleyed finish in City’s last outing against Swansea City.
But such has been Salah’s level of performance this season that even De Bruyne chose the African forward as his choice for the PFA player of the year award, as revealed by him earlier in the week. With 31 Premier League goals and counting, Salah has been the most ruthless player in England’s top flight and is a deserved winner.
