Could we have asked for anything else from the first game of IPL 2018? I am sure not. Let us take a detailed look back at the game in our IPL 2018 Match 1 MI vs CSK Post Match Report.
IPL 2018 Match 1, MI vs CSK Post Match Report – Toss
MS Dhoni IPL 2018 won the toss with a massive smile and the entire Wankhede Stadium smiled with the former Indian captain who won this country the ICC World Cup, ICC T20 World Cup, and the Champions Trophy. Dhoni had little hesitation in choosing to field first as Dhoni thought the due could play a major part when Mumbai Indians look to defend the total in the 2nd half of this match. MS Dhoni IPL 2018 confirmed his CSK playing 11 for the day which saw the surprise inclusion of Deepak Chahar in place Shardul Thakur while Mark Wood, Shane Watson, Imran Tahir, and Dwayne Bravo being the overseas players for Chennai Super Kings against Mumbai Indians.
As for Rohit Sharma, his strategy surprised everyone in attendance for when he chose a 20-year-old Mayank Markande in MI playing 11 in place of Rahul Chahar and, Mitchell McClenaghan found a place in the playing 11 with Patt Cummins not getting a game tonight. Rest of the MI playing 11 vs CSK in this match picked itself with Rohit Sharma opening the innings with Evin Lewis with the likes of Ishan Kishan, Pandya Brothers, and Kieron Pollard to follow for Mumbai Indians which seemed quite a batting lineup which MS Dhoni decided to have a crack first up.
IPL 2018 Match 1, MI vs CSK Post Match Report – MI Team Powerplay Overs
Mumbai Indians team 2018 were expecting a quick-fire start when they decided to open the innings with Rohit Sharma IPL 2018 and Evin Lewis IPL 2018, however, Lewis went back for a duck and Rohit played an underwhelming innings of 15 runs from 18 balls to leave the Mumbai Indians to 39/2 from their first 6 overs which was not a great powerplay score in any sense given the match was a Wankhede which is always seen as a big-scoring venue. Early wickets left Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav with a tough job of re-building Mumbai’s innings and ensure they do not fall behind the 8-ball.
IPL 2018 Match 1, MI vs CSK Post Match Report – Ishan and Suryakumar with a brilliant comeback
Mumbai Indians Team 2018 knew they were signing a quality player when they poached Suryakumar Yadav IPL 2018 from Kolkata Knight Riders and the experienced player showed why he can be the game changer for Mumbai Indians this season after his swashbuckling innings of 43 runs from just 29 balls which included 6 fours and a six. More than his innings, the way Suryakumar Kumar IPL 2018 allowed Ishan Kishan IPL 2018 to take his time and then opened his arms as the innings progressed. Kishan was equally effective in the middle overs with his innings of 40 from 29 balls. Suryakumar and Kishan put together a 78-run stand and gave a stunning platform for the big-hitters waiting to follow in the death overs.
IPL 2018 Match 1, MI vs CSK Post Match Report – Krunal Pandya’s brilliant finish
Krunal Pandya joined his brother Hardik when Mumbai Indians were staring at a total of less than 150 and it took a special inning from the left-hander to turn the tide in Mumbai’s favor. Krunal Pandya IPL 2018 campaign had started with a bang as he was retained by the franchise for INR 8.8 Cr and Krunal continued his stunning IPL run by smashing 41 runs from just 22 balls and although Hardik Pandya was struggling to time the ball, Krunal smashed the ball all over the park and took Mumbai’s total to 165 which at one stage looked improbable and it gave Mumbai Indians something to bowl at to start their IPL 2018 campaign on a high.
IPL 2018 Match 1, MI vs CSK Post Match Report – CSK team Powerplay Overs
Chennai Super Kings are renowned for their slow starts in the powerplay overs and it showed after being 42/2 at the end of powerplay and that too losing Suresh Raina on the last ball of the powerplay. CSK team 2018 decided to open with Ambati Rayudu with Shane Watson and the move almost paid off until Hardik Pandya knocked over Watson in the 4th over after a 27-run opening wicket stand. Hardik struck again by removing Raina in his next over to peg back CSK and gave Mumbai an advantage in the game.
IPL 2018 Match 1, MI vs CSK Post Match Report – Mayank Markande’s brilliance
Then it was the turn for the debutant Mayank Markande IPL 2018 to give body blows to CSK’s run-chase. Markande removed both Rayudu and MS Dhoni with superb deliveries. For a 20-year old wrist spinner bowling against Dhoni took some doing and then to get rid of Dhoni by bowling a wrong one was a thing of beauty. Although the umpire gave Dhoni not-out at first but even Dhoni knew that he was plumbed by a brilliant googly which got him LBW. Dhoni’s wicket left CSK struggling at 51/4 and Ravindra Jadeja soon joined his skipper in the dugout with Chennai weaving away at 75/5 which soon became 84/6 and it was now down to Dwayne Bavo to make anything left in the chase. Amidst all this chaos, Kedar Jadhav IPL 2018 had left the field retired hurt and it almost felt that nothing could go right for the returning CSK tonight.
IPL 2018 Match 1, MI vs CSK Post Match Report – Dwayne Bravo has still got it
When Mark Wood left as the 8th wicket for CSK and Kedar Jadhav IPL 2018 not certain to bat, it seemed like a certain victory but who knew Dwayne Bravo IPL 2018 could still bat and could still hit sixes out of the park. Bravo had a free hand after his team was struggling and had the license to go hard at the Mumbai Indians bowling and he did in a stunning fashion. Bravo started to hit balls out of the ground, one went out, next followed and soon Bravo was taking singles between hitting 2-3 boundaries in an over. Dwayne Bravo IPL 2018 was rather severe on McClenaghan and struck 15 and 18 runs of his over to take the game even closer. It was Jasprit Bumrah’s time to face the assault as he was hit for 3 sixes in the 19th over and left Chennai needing only 7 runs from the last ball.
IPL 2018 Match 1, MI vs CSK Post Match Report – The last over drama
When it seemed all certain for Chennai Super Kings to win the match needing 7 runs in 7 balls, Bravo got out on the last ball leaving Chennai needing 7 from the last over. Many thought the game was over with Kedar Jadhav leaving the field injured earlier in the innings with many of the scorecards declaring a win for Mumbai Indians. However, in a typical IPL like fashion, we had the drama right till the end when Jadhav came out to bat and needed to hit boundaries as he wasn’t able to run following his hamstring injury. He waited for 3 balls and then went down on his knee to hit a six over the square leg to bring down the target to just 1 from 2 balls, what does he do next? He struck the perfect cover drive to win the game for Chennai Super Kings from nowhere and sealed a remarkable return for CSK team 2018. Dwayne Bravo was named Man of the Match and rightly so for a stunning innings and that brilliant last over in the Mumbai Indians’ innings.
