- Following the one-year ban on Steve Smith by Cricket Australia, BCCI has decided to prohibit Smith and Warner from playing in IPL 2018
- Heinrich Klaasen is the number one choice for Rajasthan Royals to replace Steve Smith
- Klaasen’s ability to play spin is the main factor in RR’s decision
Following the Australian ball tampering incident, Steve Smith and David Warner won’t only be missing international cricket for the next 1 year but will also not take part in IPL 2018. After Cricket Australia announced its sanctions on the players, BCCI was quick to follow up with their own decision regarding the Australian duo’s participation in IPL. Steve Smith IPL 2018 will be spent in Australia as he watches Rajasthan Royals take the field after a 2-year gap. Following announcing the ban on these two from IPL 2018, BCCI allowed the two concerned teams SRH and RR 2018 to bring in replacements if they wanted to. According to latest reports, after missing out in the auction, Heinrich Klaasen IPL 2018 contract could actually become a reality as Rajasthan Royals look for Steve Smith IPL 2018 replacement.
Klaasen a perfect fit for Rajasthan Royals
According to Rajasthan Royals head of cricket Zubin Bharucha, Klaasen would be the perfect choice for the RR 2018 due to his ability to play spin well. The 26-year-old was in fine touch against the likes of Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal in the limited over series against India back earlier this year and that is one of the reasons why he would be an ideal player to replace someone like Steve Smith IPL 2018.
“Our aim was to get someone who can play spin well because we are pretty sure that spinners will have a big role to play during the IPL. Klaasen is an amazing player of spin. He has a vast array of shots, which tempted us to go for him. He plays the reverse sweep very well,” Bharucha said.
Rajasthan Royals to save at least INR 12 crore this season
Rajasthan Royals will confirm Heinrich Klaasen IPL 2018 contract at his base price of Rs.50 lakh, a minuscule amount when you realise that Steve Smith IPL 2018 contract was worth INR 12.5 crore. However, the franchise plans to keep Klaasen even for next year, when Steve Smith will return to the team. Speaking about their future plans, Bharucha said, “Smith will be back with us next year and we did not want to end up with two similar players. Our idea was to build the team keeping three years in mind. Even after Smith is back, Klaasen will be very useful for us.”
Rajasthan Royals will begin their IPL 2018 campaign ironically against Sunrisers Hyderabad, who themselves will be without David Warner. Ajinkya Rahane has been handed the captaincy for RR 2018 in the absence of Steve Smith IPL 2018.
