  • Mayank Agarwal will play for Kings XI Punjab in IPL 2018 after they bought him for INR 1 crore in January auction
  • The 27-year-old opener broke many domestic records in the 2017-2018 season as he scored a total of 2141 runs
  • The former RPS and RCB player is excited at the prospect of working with Indian batting legend Virender Sehwag
  • Mayank is also happy to be sharing the dressing room with T20 stars like Chris Gayle and Aaron Finch

Kings XI Punjab will start their IPL 2018 campaign against Delhi Daredevils on 8th April. The KXIP management did a superb job in the January auction buying some superstars of the T20 format. The franchise will be hoping that their power-packed squad can drive the team to their first ever IPL title. Mayank Agarwal IPL 2018 will be with the Kings XI Punjab, as the opener looks to continue from where he left off in the domestic season. The 27-year-old batsman broke all domestic records as he notched up 2141 runs across all formats in the domestic circuit during the 2017-2018 season. However, even after such a brilliant season, the Karnataka born player hasn’t been able to break into the Indian side, something he hopes he can change with a good performance in IPL 2018, especially with Virender Sehwag IPL 2018 overlooking the development of the team.

Mayank Agarwal IPL 2018 will come after playing for the likes of RCB, RPS and Delhi Daredevils, want’s to do well in the upcoming tournament in order to not be termed as a one season wonder. Speaking to the Times of India, Mayank said, “For me as a player, one of the targets would be to succeed in this year’s IPL. I don’t want to be called a one-season wonder. You want to get better with every season. I don’t want anyone to point fingers at me and say that he didn’t perform after one season.”

‘If playing in the middle-order helps the team, so be it’ Mayank Agarwal

Even though Mayank comes into the Kings XI Punjab after a brilliant domestic season, his place in the starting XI is yet to be guaranteed, given that KXIP have a host of openers in their squad, including the likes of Chris Gayle, Aaron Finch, KL Rahul and Karun Nair. In order to get playing time in IPL 2018, Mayank might need to bat in the middle-order, something he isn’t afraid to do if it helps the team. “My aim is to add value to the side, and it doesn’t only have to be as an opener. If playing in the middle-order helps the team, so be it. Cricket is not an individual sport, it is a team sport. The team management decides what the role of a player should be; and, at the end of the day, as a player, you have to go out there and perform,” said the right-hander.

Mayank looking forward to learning from Virender Sehwag and Chris Gayle

After coaching the Kings XI Punjab last season, Virender Sehwag IPL 2018 will see him as the team director. Young players like Mayank Agarwal IPL 2018 will have the opportunity with Virender Sehwag IPL 2018 to take advice from one of the best openers the game of cricket has seen. Chris Gayle IPL 2018 started on a not so happy note after he went unsold twice in the auction but in the third time of asking KXIP picked him up for his base price. Both these experienced openers, who share the same ideas when it comes to their aggressive batting style will be of great help to upcoming players like Mayank Agarwal.

“He (Sehwag) is my favourite cricketer. As a kid, I was always fascinated by the way he took the attack to the opposition and the way he dominated. What I would like to learn from him (Sehwag) is his mindset while tackling various situations,” said Mayank while speaking about Virender Sehwag IPL 2018.

Apart from Sehwag, Mayank will also get a chance to spend quality time with international stars like Chris Gayle, Aaron Finch and Ravi Ashwin. “Besides him, I would also like to learn as much as possible from other stalwarts like Gayle, Finch and [Ravichandran] Ashwin. I am looking forward to playing under Ashwin’s captaincy, and evolve under his leadership. At the end of the day, performance will be the key and I am hoping I can put in a good show.”
