5 replacements for David Warner and Steve Smith in IPL 2018

Following the judgement passed by Cricket Australia today, that both Steve Smith and David Warner have been banned from all international cricket for one year, the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) has decided to terminate the existing IPL contracts of these two players. This is the worst possible situation for Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad, who had Smith and Warner has their preferred captains for IPL 11. While Ajinkya Rahane has been given the captaincy of Rajasthan Royals 2018 IPL season, Sunrisers Hyderabad are still looking for David Warner replacement. BCCI has allowed both the concerned team to find a replacement if they feel the need to. In this article, we look at the 5 players who will be ideal as Steve Smith replacement or David Warner replacement.

Joe Root

If Rajasthan Royals are looking for a like-to-like replacement than their best bet would be England test captain Joe Root. The 27-year-old had registered for the IPL auction for the first time this year, however, like many English cricketers, Root surprisingly went unsold. The Yorkshire batsman has an average of almost 40 in T20I, with a strike-rate of 128.76, stats that any T20 specialist would be proud of.

Joe Root is a very experienced leader and will definitely aid Ajinkya Rahane in leading the RR franchise in IPL season 11. The English international prefers batting at that crucial number 3 spot, which is also where the Australian former captain bats, hence making him an ideal Steve Smith replacement without changing the balance of the Rajasthan Royals IPL 2018.

Martin Guptill

In one of the most shocking decisions made in the 2018 IPL auction, none of the teams decided to go for New Zealand opener Martin Guptill, who ironically is the highest run-getter in international T20’s. Having scored close to 2300 T20I runs, at a phenomenal average of 34.40, Guptill is definitely going to strengthen the team that he plays for. With David Warner IPL 2018 over, SRH are in a desperate need to find David Warner replacement to partner Shikhar Dhawan at the top of the order.

He could also join Rajasthan Royals and allow newly appointed captain Ajinkya Rahane to bat at his preferred number 3 slot. Till now Guptill has played only 10 IPL matches, which is shocking for a player of his quality but you can rest assured that if he is brought in for IPL 11, he will make his presence felt.

Shaun Marsh

Having represented KXIP for the past 10 seasons of IPL, Shaun Marsh was surprisingly not picked up at the 2018  IPL auction. The Australian middle-order batsman arrived on the scene in the very first season and even after missing the first 4 matches, he went on to finish the season as the highest run-scorer and the first Orange Cap winner in IPL history.

Over his long career, Shaun Marsh has managed to amass over 5000 T20 runs, which clearly makes him an asset wherever he plays. He might have lost some of his hitting power over the years. He will be good solid Steve Smith replacement for Rajasthan Royals 2018 team.

Luke Ronchi

If current form is anything to go by there is no better David Warner replacement in the right now than Luke Ronchi. The Kiwi batsman was in superb form in the recently concluded PSL, where his 435 runs in 11 innings, not only helped his team win the PSL trophy but also helped him earn the player of the tournament award. Ronchi’s base price was just INR 75 lakhs at the January auction and he still went unsold.

Well, the current world cricket situation has given SRH 2018 team a chance to sign one of the most destructive batsmen in the world right now and it would be very surprising to see this deal not being taken up by the management.

Alex Hales

Alex Hales is another English player who is highly talented and especially in the shortest format of the game but went unsold at the auction with a base price of INR 1 crore. There are some chinks in his game, his fielding has been criticised by former players in recent times but one thing he is very very good at is his hitting capabilities.

The 29-year-old has scored over 4700 T20 runs in his career at an average 29, with a strike-rate of 143.54. Stats that should be enough to convince either Rajasthan Royals 2018 team or SRH 2018 team that they give him a chance. He might have the reputation that a David Warner does but he definitely has the game to turn into a true match-winner on his day.
