- Both Smith and Warner were found guilty of ball tampering in the 3rd test match against South Africa at Newlands, Capetown
- Smith and Warner could miss out on IPL 2018 and the ICC World Cup 2019
The disgraced Australian cricketers Steve Smith and David Warner could face a ban of up to one year from Cricket Australia (CA) after being found guilty of ball tampering in the 3rd test match against South Africa at Newlands, Capetown. Steve Smith ball tampering saga has brought shame to Cricket Australia (CA) and the board is now under immense pressure from their leading sponsors and former cricketers to take strict action against both Steve Smith and David Warner.
Cricket Australia’s long-term sponsors Commonwealth Bank issued a public notice yesterday demanding quick action following the shameful ball tampering row involving Smith and Warner. Commonwealth Bank have been the sponsors of Australian men’s cricket team for over 30 years now which is forcing Cricket Australia’s hands in taking stronger action than previously imagined.
The statement from Commonwealth Bank read: “We are disappointed about the events that have emerged from the third Test in South Africa and have asked for a full explanation from Cricket Australia following the conclusion of its investigation into this affair.” Cricket Australia (CA) is to sign new deals with their several sponsors later this year which could further impact their decision of banning Steve Smith and David Warner for a time period of up to 1 year following which their ICC World Cup 2019 participation could also come in doubt.
Steve Smith and David Warner sweating over their IPL deals
Rajasthan Royals (RR) were quick to punish the Steve Smith ball tampering after they removed the Australian batsman as their captain and named Ajinkya Rahane as their replacement. Although Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) are yet to comment on David Warner ball tampering issue but following Rajasthan’s decision, SRH could also follow the suit and sack Warner from captaincy. Shikhar Dhawan is being lined up as the next SRH captain for IPL 2018. Both Smith and Warner are in danger of missing the entire season of Indian Premier League (IPL) and could lose millions if the IPL sides decide to take strict action against Steve Smith and David Warner for the ball tampering controversy.
Cricket Australia officials already in South Africa
Once the Steve Smith ball tampering row became public and ICC announced their decision to ban Steve Smith for one test match and fine Cameron Bancroft of 75% of his match fee, Cricket Australia (CA) were quick to send their officials to South Africa to investigate the matter quickly and are expected to submit their verdict on Steve Smith ball tampering controversy on Wednesday morning. Cricket Australia (CA) face a moral dilemma as they have to set a stern example for rest of the world and the young players aspiring to play for Australia which could see Steve Smith and David Warner get a ban of up to 1 year and possibly miss out on playing in the ICC World Cup 2019 as well.
