Out of the 10 seasons, 5 times an Indian has picked up the Purple Cap with Bhuvneshwar Kumar being winner of Purple Cap in 2017 and 2016 season.  The Purple Cap in IPL 2018 will be an intensely fought out contest between some of the best T20 bowlers in the world. With all the 8 teams looking evenly matched and so many good bowlers to pick from, it will be tough to decide who will pick the most wickets in IPL 2018. We are going to be discussing who could be the IPL 11 Purple Cap Holder and be rightfully called as the IPL 2018 Purple Cap Holder. We would also be taking a look back at the winner of Purple Cap in IPL 2017.

Purple Cap in IPL 2018 – Who can pick most wickets in IPL 2018?

It just goes to show how far the IPL has come when you remember that Pakistani pacer Sohail Tanvir was the first ever Purple Cap winner playing for Rajasthan Royals way back in 2008. Only once in previous 10 seasons has a spinner ended up as the Purple Cap winner that was back in 2010 in season 3 when Pragyan Ojha won the award. It is practically impossible to predict who will be the IPL 2018 Purple Cap holder, but we will try and predict the contenders who will be able to pick the most wickets in IPL 2018. Bhuvneshwar Kumar with 2 Purple Caps in a row will be one of the favourites to win IPL Purple Cap 2018. He has picked up a combined total of 49 wickets over the past two seasons and remains India’s prime bowler in limited over format. His main competition could come from his team-mate Rashid Khan, who was recently appointed as the captain of the Afghanistan team, at the age of only 19. In his first season with Sunrisers Hyderabad, the young spinner picked up 17 wickets at an astonishing economy of 6.62 and will once again be the top contender to win the IPL 2018 Purple Cap.

India’s current limited over the pairing of Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal has wrecked havoc in almost all the matches they have played together, and that is why both of them will be strong contenders for the IPL 11 Purple Cap. While Kuldeep Yadav picked up 12 wickets in 8 T20I matches in 2017, Chahal ended the year as the highest wicket-taker after picking up 23 scalps in just 11 matches. Both of these spinners will make a strong case to win the IPL 2018 Purple Cap honor. This year’s race for the IPL Purple Cap 2018 could prove to be the toughest of all the previous season’s of Indian Premier League.

Among the other IPL 2018 Purple Cap contenders, Kings XI Punjab and Delhi Daredevils bowlers will also be in teh queue after both teams have considerably strengthened their bowling resources and it should not come as a surprise if a bowler from either of these teams picks up most wickets in IPL 2018. The Purple Cap in IPL 2018 will be a battle of grit as kuch as of ability as all the bowlers would want to end the season with most wickets in IPL 2018 and win the IPL 2018 purple cup.

Rooter will be updating this space as the season progress and you can just bookmark it to follow the battle for the IPL 11 Purple Cap in 2018 season.

Purple Cap in IPL 2017

Indian players dominated the top 10 in the highest wicket-takers list. 6 of the 10 spots were occupied by Indian players including the top 3. As we have already mentioned above, Bhuvneshwar Kumar was the winner of Purple Cap in IPL 2017 and is a strong favourite to win the Purple Cap in IPL 2018. He was followed Jaydev Unadkat, who picked up 24 wickets in 12 matches for Rising Pune Supergiants, and hence it wasn’t shocking to see him as the most expensive player in the mega-auction held back in January this year. The top 3 was rounded off by someone who is known as a death over specialist and a master in T20 Jasprit Bumrah. The 24-year-old has been fantastic for the Mumbai Indians over the past few seasons and that is why he was one of the 3 retained players by the MI franchise before the auction.

There were 3 spinners in the top 10, Imran Tahir was superb whole of last season and finished with 18 wickets. The South African will be playing under MS Dhoni at Chennai Super Kings this season after he was picked up at the auction for INR 1 crore. The biggest challenger to Bhuvneshwar’s Purple Cap in 2018 will be Rashid Khan, who picked up 17 wickets in his debut season in the IPL, which was even at INR 9.6 crore, SRH didn’t flinch before using the right to match to secure his services. Pawan Negi was the lone Indian spinner in the top 10 with 16 wickets. Umesh Yadav was another Indian bowler in the top 10, he finished in the 8th spot with 17 wickets, same as his team-mate of last year Chris Woakes. However, both these bowlers will be appearing for the Royal Challengers Bangalore this year after they were bought for INR 4.2 crore and INR 7.4 crore respectively.

The eleventh season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) kicks-off on 7th April at the Wankhede Stadium where the defending champions Mumbai Indians will take on the returning Chennai Super Kings.
