The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a stage where the world’s top batting stalwarts assemble every year and showcase their skills and wizardry during the two-month long cricket carnival. The eleventh edition of the world’s premier domestic T20 league is just a few days away and this presents us with the perfect opportunity to analyse and see as to which batsmen can rise to the occasion and challenge for the coveted Orange Cap in IPL 2018 – an award which is given to the player with most runs at the end of every season. From Shaun Marsh’s magical batting in the inaugural season in 2008 to Little Master Sachin Tendulkar’s ever so consistent displays in 2010 to Chris Gayle’s raw power in 2011 and 2012 to modern maestro Virat Kohli’s unassailable tally of 973 runs in 2016, the IPL Orange Cap has always gone to a worthy beholder. As is always the case, the Orange Cap in IPL 2018 will also be an intensely fought contest between some of the best T20 batsmen in the world. With all the 8 teams looking evenly matches and so many world-class batsmen to pick from, it will be tough to decide who will score the most runs in IPL 2018? We are going to discuss as to which player could emerge as the IPL 11 Orange Cap Holder and list down potential names who can win the IPL 2018 Orange Cap and also throw some light on the winner of Orange Cap in IPL 2017.
Orange Cap in IPL 2018 – Most Runs in IPL 2018
Virat Kohli – 201 runs in 4 matches
Sanju Samson – 178 runs in 3 matches
Andre Russell – 153 runs in 4 matches
Evin Lewis – 142 runs in 4 matches
Rishabh Pant – 138 runs in 4 matches
The first name that springs to mind while discussing the contenders who can win the Orange Cap in IPL 2018 is Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Virat Kohli. The Indian maestro is the only player in the history of the league to have scored over 900 runs in a single season and will be itching to get back his crown after a disappointing campaign in 2017.
One man who is out of the race for IPL Orange Cap 2018 is the Australian David Warner who won the award twice in last three seasons. David Warner is out of the IPL 2018 Orange Cup race after he received a 12-month ban by Cricket for his ball-tampering scandal and subsequently, Warner’s IPL contract was suspended for IPL 2018. This year, IPL Orange Cup 2018 race will feel something different with Warne not being a part of it. We will see someone new be the Orange Cap Holder in IPL 2018.
Another name that springs to mind is that of Suresh Raina, who is the leading run-getter in the history of IPL but has never won the coveted Orange Cap. The veteran southpaw will be back playing for CSK this year and has the ability to score most runs in IPL 2018. Raina will bat at his beloved number 3 spot and have the support of CSK’s familiar teammates which could see Raine be the Orange Cap Holder in IPL 2018.
Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma has three IPL trophies in his cabinet but like Raina, the destructive right-hander is yet to emerge as the highest run-scorer in a single season. He will again be a candidate to become the Orange Cap holder in IPL 2018. There are claims that Rohit could open the innings this season which will indeed make him favorite for the IPL 2018 Orange Cap.
The real darkhorse for the IPL Orange Cap 2018 race will be Chris Lynn as the destructive opener can certainly emerge as IPL 11 Orange Cap Holder if he plays the entire tournament. Another wildcard to win the Orange Cap in IPL 2018 is last year’s MVP, Ben Stokes who is capable of scoring big runs and top-scoring in any major competition. Stokes will be a regular name in the list of IPL 2018 Orange Cap chasing pack.
Rooter will be updating this space as the season progress and you can just bookmark it to follow the battle for IPL 2018 Orange Cap.
