- The Australian ball tampering scandal has left the world of cricket in a state of shock
- Footage of Cameron Bancroft ball tampering emerged during third day’s play in Newlands Test
- Fans and former cricket greats like Adam Gilchrist have slammed Australia resorting to cricket ball tampering
The Australian cricket team was hit by one of the biggest scandals to have surfaced in the game in recent years as the ‘Cameron Bancroft ball tampering’ controversy unfolded on TV sets across the globe on Saturday (March 24). The rookie opener was found using a ‘sandpaper’ like object on the ball during the third day’s proceedings in the ongoing Newlands Test between South Africa and Australia, charges which were later addressed and accepted by both Bancroft and his skipper Steve Smith at an elaborate press conference after the end of day. The incident has brought a great deal of criticism from the former Australian players including the legendary wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist.
As expected, the whole Australia ball tampering incident brought in severe backlash and criticism from fans and pundits, with Steve Smith’s men labeled as “a disgrace” and “cheats” on social media and other platforms. This latest ball tampering controversy has emerged at a time when the ongoing Test series has already been marked with a series of infamous incidents and plenty of things being said on either side. After the particularly peculiar ‘Steve Smith brain fade’ incidence in India last year, ‘cricket ball tampering’ is yet another situation where the Australian is expected to face a lot of fire in the coming days.
Aussie legend Adam Gilchrist left shocked and surprised by Australia ball tampering incident
Legendary wicketkeeper-batsman Adam Gilchrist was among the many former cricket greats who expressed their shock and disappointment over the Bancroft ball tampering situation and said that he was “stunned, saddened and embarrassed” by the whole issue and the Australian team was the “laughing stock of world sport”.
“I’m really sad, shocked, stunned — I’m not trying to overdramatise it but (I’m) really emotional about this,” Gilchrist said.
“Australian cricket now and the integrity of Australian cricket is the laughing stock of world sport. This clearly is against the laws of the game and we’ve just had our national captain and our national team admit that they sat down, premeditated and pre-planned a way to cheat.”
Following the Australia ball tampering issue coming to light, Adam Gilchrist also expressed his apprehensions about Steve Smith continuing as the country’s captain.
“I’m not sure he (Smith) can remain captain. I think it’s a pretty tough position to hold after you’ve admitted to what you’ve admitted to, (to be able to) carry on with any faith from anyone watching. We’ll wait and see whether he’s told, or whether he stands aside,” Gilchrist added.
Adam Gilchrist also questions role of “leadership group” in Bancroft ball tampering scandal
While it was the ‘Steve Smith brain fade’ comment which made all the headlines on Australia’s tour to India last year, his admission that the team’s “leadership group” was in the knowledge and involved in cricket ball tampering on Day 3 of the Newlands Test, Adam Gilchrist, a former Australian vice-captain, also stated that the Bancroft ball tampering controversy also brings into question the role and composition of the “leadership group” and what happens to them.
“Then that implicates the senior playing group — he spoke about the leadership group,” Adam Gilchrist said.
“I don’t remember a dedicated leadership group a la Australian rules football where they name who the leadership group is — (in my day) it was pretty much coach, captain and vice-captain who were the leadership group. Match bans or fines, they’re going to pale into insignificance if (Smith) loses the captaincy and if players get relieved of those leadership positions.
“It might implicate (David) Warner as vice-captain, I don’t know.”
