Delhi Daredevils and Nepal star Sandeep Lamichhane says he wants to be No 1, dedicates jersey to niece
Sandeep Lamichhane’s IPL 2018 journey has started with the unveiling of Delhi Daredevils jersey in Kathmandu by NSC member Keshab Kumar Bista and CEO of Delhi Daredevils Team 2018 Hemant Dua
The 17-year-old leg-spinner became the first ever player from an associate nation to be picked up by an IPL team
His first choice for jersey number was 25, but because it wasn’t available he chose number 1 which is also the birth month of his niece, who died recently and signifies his dream of becoming No.1 in the world
In latest Live Cricket News, 17-year-old Sandeep Lamichhane became the first ever cricketer from Nepal to be picked up by an IPL franchise – Delhi Daredevils 2018. He rose to fame with a successful outing at the 2016 U-19 World Cup where he guided Nepal to a creditable eighth place. On the basis of his recent performances, the management believed that the young leg-spinner would fit perfectly into the Delhi Daredevils team 2018. Sandeep Lamichhane’s IPL 2018 campaign might not afford him too much playing time but he will play an important part in the squad and should be ready to perform to the best of his abilities whenever he is called upon to do so.
At an event in Kathmandu, Member Secretary of National Sports Council of Nepal Keshab Kumar Bista and CEO of Delhi Daredevils Hemant Dua, presented the Delhi Daredevils jersey to Nepalese international Sandeep Lamichhane. According to the earlier schedule, Nepal PM KP Sharma Oli was supposed to grace the event, however, due to health concerns he couldn’t make it. At the end, it was left to NSC member Keshab Kumar Bista to do the honours and mark a historic moment in cricket development in Nepal and for Delhi Daredevils 2018.
Delhi Daredevils Team will enter the 11th season of the Indian Premier League hoping to win their maiden IPL title under the captaincy of Gautam Gambhir, who is a making a return to his hometown after a successful spell with KKR. Lamichhane had earlier asked the Delhi Daredevils team to give him the 25th Jersey number as it was the birth date of his niece, who tragically passed away recently. However, since the number was already taken and wasn’t available, the teenager settled for Number 1 as it was his nieces’ birth month and it signified his dream of becoming the number 1 bowler in world cricket.
Sandeep Lamichhane dedicates Delhi Daredevils Team jersey to niece
Speaking at the unveiling of his jersey, Lamichhane said, as reported by the Himalayan Times, “I had asked for No.25 as that was the birth date of my niece, who is no more in this world, and I wanted to dedicate that to her. As that was not available, I chose No 1 which is the birth month of my niece. And also because I always wanted to be the No 1.”
Lamichhane also spoke about his expectations from the upcoming season and was quite comfortable in admitting that long periods on the bench won’t hamper his confidence till the time the team is doing well. “Whoever plays in the field or sits on the bench, what matters is the team’s win. If I get a chance to play, I will give my best,” he added.
Delhi Daredevils Team 2018 will start their campaign on 8th April against the Kings XI Punjab at the IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali. Delhi Daredevils Team CEO Hemant Dua spoke about the young Nepalese spinner and whether the purchase was made to have the first foothold in Nepal, a nation which is still mostly untouched by cricket.
Dua said, “We do not want to undermine his talent by saying that. That’s not true. He was picked up purely on the basis of his talent.”
“We understand that the whole Nepal wants him to play but at the end of the day that is the decision of the coach and captain. So we will have good 10 days before IPL and everyone will have a fair chance to play practice matches and showcase their talent,”
Delhi Daredevils 2018 have a host of options to choose from when it comes to picking spinners in the starting XI. IPL veteran Amit Mishra is in the Delhi Daredevils Team 2018, alongside hugely talented Shahbaz Nadeem, therefore a regular place in the side looks unlikely in Sandeep Lamichhane’s IPL 2018 journey but whenever he gets a chance and if he does make a difference in the match, you can be rest assured that the whole of Nepal will be celebrating.
