Cricket fans across the country look forward to every season of Indian Premier League (IPL) for a variety of reasons – exhilarating on field action, the return of old powerhouses Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings, the ever-present thrill of watching domestic Indian players rub shoulders with global stalwarts being some of them. IPL 2018 will have yet another pull-in factor for the fans – the opportunity to see India’s U-19 World Cup stars in action in home conditions. One among many such teenage stars is Shubman Gill, who was snapped up by the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR Team 2018) and is likely to be an integral part of project KKR 2018 under new skipper Dinesh Karthik. While KKR Team 2018 will also feature Kamlesh Nagarkoti and Shivam Mavi, Shubman Gill IPL 2018 is certain to grab all the initial eyeballs in KKR IPL 2018 as it was his destructive batting which led India to a U-19 World Cup triumph in New Zealand last month. The Punjab-batsman also won the prestigious ‘Player of the Tournament‘ award at the end of the tournament.
For Gill though, the World Cup title win is a closed chapter now. He has set new targets and is ready for fresh challenges with the KKR team in IPL 2018. The talented youngster is working hard to make mission ‘Shubman Gill IPL 2018’ a success for himself and his team.
IPL 2018 will be a big step for us: Shubman Gill
In a freewheeling chat with The Telegraph on Thursday (March 22), Gill said: “The IPL will be a big step for all of us and a great learning experience. Rahul (Dravid) Sir has already told us that it’s more of a mental thing now. Everyone has the skills, but how you are mentally prepared to deliver on a particular day is what matters most. You’ve got to be mentally prepared to deliver a big innings and make it a special moment for the team.”
To get in sync with KKR Team 2018, the young lad is already in Kolkata and leaving no stone unturned to make ‘Shubman Gill IPL 2018’ a success. “I’ve had some really good net sessions and these sort of things really boost up your confidence and motivate you,” he added.
The 18-year-old also revealed that he is excited at the prospect of meeting Australian maestro Mitchell Starc IPL 2018 and facing him in the KKR 2018 nets. “Facing Starc at nets will really be exciting. I can only imagine that he will be really quick and will be bowling bouncers at me… These things come to my mind and I’m preparing myself mentally,” Gill said.
Things couldn’t have been concluded without a mention of India’s U-19 coach Rahul Dravid, the man who is shaping the future of Indian cricket. Gill had no qualms in stating that India’s legendary No.3 batsman has been a great mentor and has played a big role in shaping his career, which would pay off for KKR 2018 in upcoming IPL 11.
“I’m not in touch with Rahul Sir anymore. He had a one-on-one with us before we were leaving for our hometowns after the World Cup. There were a couple of things he stressed upon… He told us about few important goals… He reminded us about the conversion rate, about how many players have played for India from the team that last won the title.”
