England vs New Zealand, cricket latest news: Trent Boult claims 7 wickets, Tim Southee claims 3
Black Caps ace bowler Trent Boult claimed his career-best figures of six wickets for 32 runs, while his new-ball partner Tim Southee took four wickets giving only 35 runs, after New Zealand captain Kane Williamson won the toss on Thursday and chose to bowl.
While England almost fell for the lowest score in Test cricket, they also passed England lowest test score by close (45 runs). The England lowest test score remains the 45, that the team had scored against Australia in Sydney in January 1887.
While Trent Boult dismissed Alastair Cook to claim the first wicket of the fixture in the first 15 minutes of the England vs New Zealand Test, he dismissed Joe Root on duck in the right next over, with Dawid Malan getting caught behind on 2 runs on Trent Boult’s bowling in the succeeding over.
This was the time when Tim Southee got in on the action as well, forcing opener Mark Stoneman to edge one through to Watling. Mark Stoneman scored 11 runs off 20 balls before getting out, which was the second-highest score of the England innings in the England vs New Zealand Test.
Trent Boult then bowled Ben Stokes out for a duck again, leaving England 18-5 at the end of the 11th over, a position which threatened them to get all out with the lowest score in Test cricket. And in the 12th over, England scoreline wen to 18-6 when Tim Southee caught and bowled Jonny Bairstow for the third duck of the innings.
Trent Boult then took another wicket for a fifth over in a row, bowling out Chris Woakes for five runs to complete his sixth five-wicket haul in test cricket, pushing down England to 23-7.
Soon after, Tim Southee got his third wicket when he bowled out Moeen Ali for another duck with a beautifully bowled slower yorker delivery. At 23-8, it looked that England would beat New Zealand’s world record for the lowest score in test cricket, i.e. 26 runs. However, Craig Overton proved to be the hero for England, as he scored 25-ball 33 to take England over the lowest score in test cricket, but couldn’t help and escape registering the fifth lowest score in test cricket for England.
