With his team in a massive spot of bother in the big final against Shivaji Park Lions, Yadav brought all his big game experience into play and helped the Triumph Knights to a solid total of 182 runs in their 20 overs, which was ultimately enough to lift the inaugural T20 Mumbai League trophy.
After the final win, Yadav gave a heartfelt interview in the post-match press conference and aired his views on topics like the impact of T20 Mumbai League, the pressure of playing in a big final and how he is preparing to play for the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2018.
On saving his best for the big T20 Mumbai final
As reported by the official website of the T20 Mumbai League, Suryakumar Yadav said that he was very happy with his own game-changing innings in the final but also emphasized that the title win was a complete team effort.
“Since the first match that Akash (Parkar) won us, every single individual has performed well. The support staff has been brilliant, they have given us that freedom to go out there and play freely,” he said.
On what was going through his mind when he walked in to bat at 34/5
The Triumph Knights captain revealed that once his team lost a couple of early wickets, the only instruction that he sent out to the rest of the batting unit was to bat through the innings as he was confident that the pressure of chasing any total in a final will take a toll on the opposition.
“Chasing anything above 140 was going to be difficult. I just told the boys to take this as just another game. Just try and put 200 hundred percent of your effort without thinking about the end result. There were a lot of things running in my mind when I came in to bat, but I took a deep breath and thought about batting till the end and whatever total come our way, we would try to defend it rather than pushing harder and losing my wicket. I was just trying to play cricketing shots rather than trying out different things,” he stated.
On the support he got from Parikshit Valsangkar
“I think Parikshit (Valsangkar) batted brilliantly with me. I had told him to just bat 20 overs and not think about a specific target. When I went in to bat, I needed a partner and Parikshit played that role of anchoring the innings. He helped me a lot to take the game till the last over and we got a good total in the end,” Suryakumar Yadav said, heaping praise on his batting partner.
On how he used T20 Mumbai to prepare for his Mumbai Indians stint in IPL 2018
The powerful 27-year-old right-hander also stated he is adamant to make project ‘Suryakumar Yadav IPL 2018’ a success as he prepares to link up with his new teammates at Mumbai Indians. The same was also going through his mind during the final.
“I will play most of my Indian Premier League games here (at the Wankhede Stadium) itself, so I wanted to use the opportunity and get some form which will hopefully help me later in IPL,” he signed off.
