Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli on par in Tests, says Sourav Ganguly

In today’s Cricket latest news former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly believes Cheteshwar Pujara is equally important as Virat Kohli for Team India in test matches. Ganguly believes Pujara’s ability to bat for the longer duration gives the stroke batsmen like Kohli, Rahane, Rohit Sharma / Hardik Pandya to take on the opposition’s bowling.

Cheteshwar Pujara is as important as Virat Kohli

Sourav Ganguly was speaking at the launch of his book ‘A century is not enough‘ where he claimed that Pujara often goes unnoticed despite his sensational record in the test matches. Ganguly said, as reported by NDTV Sports, “Pujara is from the old school of cricketers who will keep working hard and deliver. Look at his Test records, after 57 matches, he’s got 14 hundreds. He just goes unnoticed.”

“Along with Virat Kohli in this team, his record is as good as anybody. He’s from that school of cricket where he will grind you, grind you and win you matches. Players like Pujara take the shine off the new ball, allow the stroke makers to make batting easier. He is as important to this Test team as Virat Kohli. But sometimes he goes unnoticed.”

Best teams need their best batsman to bat at no. 3

Ganguly claimed that all the best teams from yesteryear had the luxury of having the finest test players batting at no. 3. South Africa had Jacques Kallis, Australia had Ricky Ponting and India at their best had Rahul Dravid playing as the shield and Sourav Ganguly believes, Pujara is doing a similar thing for this Indian team which then allows Virat Kohli to play freely which is why Pujara and Kohli are on par with each other and are equally important for Team India.

Pujara was present for Ganguly’s book launch and replying to Dada’s comments Pujara claimed that he prefers to play in an old-fashioned manner and still prefers the test format despite working on playing lofted and innovative shots to fit himself in the ODI and T20 format. Pujara has played just 5 ODIs for India and will not be part of IPL 2018 either. Pujara will be playing in the upcoming English County season which will help him get familiar with the English conditions ahead of India’s vital tour of England.
